make it big

It is true that simple acts of kindness can transform people’s day, but what about something large? Lets go the extra mile and do something big like free yard work for an elderly neighbor or changing a flat tire for someone on the side of the road.  Getting into kind habits is wonderful, but if we make it big, think about how much more wonderful.

only the laundry

My mom said the only thing that should be separated by color is laundry, but when I was little, I remember seeing "whites only" signs and public water fountains were all labeled "colored" or "white." I didn't understand it. I still see people not wanting to interact with people of different races or ethnicities and I still don't understand it.  Why be separate? The more we experience each other, the more we experience life!

They add up

Those little things - they add up. Small acts of kindness can mean a lot. I remember when I was little and we would go out in the cold for the winter festival where I lived. Our little bodies would be freezing and Mom would give us a great big hug. It was just a small gesture, but it sure helped to warm us up! That nice hot apple cider helped a lot too!  With the cold months arriving, I was thinking back to winters past.  I remember when we would go Christmas caroling and people would invite us into their home for a nice hot bowl of jook or some steaming hot chocolate.  It's those little kind things that people do that mean so much.

It’s Officially Christmas

I'm listening to Dan+Shay sing "It’s Officially Christmas." They are correct of course. Today is Christmas Day. I know a lot of people don't celebrate and then there are those who have been celebrating for over a month now. Yes, we are all different. In our kindness though we should respect that. So often this is called the "Season of Giving" and what better gift is there that the gift of kindness? Happiness to you all!

One of the happiest things for me is when I make someone happy.  It doesn't have to take a lot of effort.  It's usually pretty simple.  Talk to people.  Be interested in their life.  Show that you care.  It's amazing but if you make someone happy, you will find that it also makes you happy.

My tradition

There isn't a single holiday decoration up at my apartment and I haven't sent out any Christmas cards.  That my surprise you. I do celebrate, I'm very traditional and it isn't Christmas yet. I'll be putting up a tree tomorrow afternoon, and I will be singing carols.  I'm very traditional when it comes to kindness too.  It is ALWAYS important!

My mother was a very kind person.  People noticed.  It was part of who she was.  I hope a lot of that rubbed off on me.  I try.  Today would have been Mom's birthday, and even though she passed away several years ago, this is one of those days she is especially present in my mind.  I want to do things that would make her proud.  I miss you Mom!

Hot Chocolate

There was a wonderful British soul band that was popular during the 1970s and 1980s, called Hot Chocolate, but you know I am actually going to say something about the beverage. What I have to say is really pretty simple. I happen to like hot chocolate (cocoa) just about any time, but especially when the weather is cold.  One of the kindest things anyone can do is to offer me a piping hot cup!

I'm seeing such a wonderful outpouring of positive statements about people who have recently died.  That of course is a good thing, but I can't help think about the thoughts that weren't expressed during a person's lifetime.  If you love them and respect them, tell them now.  Let them hear it directly from you during their lifetime.  Don't wait until after they are gone.

I keep hearing reach out. Share your problems. Talk about it. Reveal it. Ask for help. Yup.   All of that is good of course, but if we truly care, it is up to us to reach out to others. Do you know someone who is all alone and possibly feeling lonely or depressed?  Don't wait for their cry for help. Be there for them!

When someone is kind enough to give you something, return that kindness by acknowledging their gift and saying thank you.  Someone buys you lunch?  Say thank you!  Someone gives you a present?  Say thank you!  Someone donates to a fundraiser you are sponsoring?  Say thank you!  I think written thank you notes are especially appropriate.

I woke up on this Friday morning and the first thing I thought of was to make someone happy! (Yes that is indeed an old Jimmy Durante song. June Christy, Doris Day, Perry Como, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Sergio Franchi, Dinah Washington, and Judy Garland also recorded it, along with a number of others. Early beginnings

It was a children's novel by Esther Forbes that first made me aware of standing up for others and trying to make a difference.  That book, Johnny Tremain, had a message that will stay with me forever.  Learning about love and kindness came earlier, largely from my mom and dad and a kind priest who always believed in me.  That is one of my guiding lights as I write these brief messages each morning.

I remember when I was little seeing the niceness of the spring plants poking up through the snow.  I remember the hyacinth plants that I loved for both their beauty and that wonderful smell.  I remember how nice the changing of the seasons made folks feel.  That was when I was little in Upstate New York.  I don't seem to see the niceness as much anymore.  Why is that?

A simple phone call

Yesterday morning the phone rang, and I was delighted to hear the voice of a friend I haven't spoken to in a couple of years.  (We have emailed and messaged, but this was our first time speaking to each other).  It made my day!  Something so simple and so kind - a phone call.  Kindness doesn't have to be complex.

There was a time when everybody cared about everyone else.  Really.  I'm not taking about being nosy.  I'm talking about genuine concern for other people, even if you don't know them.  That seems to have disappeared, and that makes me sad.  If you have a big family or a lot of friends, it might not seem like a big deal, but for others it does matter.  What a wonderful feeling it is to know that someone cares about you.  It also really feels good to be the caring one.

Some days I see so many examples of kindness, it truly warms my heart. Yesterday it seemed to be everywhere, and I will tell some of those stories in the days ahead. The beauty of the earth

Each morning I see things I haven't noticed before.  I see trees and plants and flowers I wasn't aware of and I notice the clouds in the sky and the birds that fly past me and even the occasional rabbit that runs away as I approach.  When you live in a big city, as I used to, you might not be as aware, but I have friends who notice and rejoice in the beauty of the earth.  When you see this, you have to think about preserving it.  We need to think about keeping the beauty around for others.  We need to be kind to our planet, just as we are kind to each other.

My grandmother used to keep an empty coffee can to collect any coins she might accumulate during the day.  When the can was full, she'd donate it.  Another thing about cans, many of them are recyclable.  That is indeed kind to the planet. Many people participate in food drives to help out those who may have little or no food.  Food in cans is especially good because it lasts longer.

Gifts don't come with strings attached.  Has someone ever told you how many things they have done for you and how much you now owe them? In my way of thinking, they gave you nothing at all.  Of course, it is always very nice to do kind things for those who have done kind things for you, but that should not be your reason. Actually, no reason is necessary at all. Give out of the love in your heart and expect nothing in return. That is the real joy.

I keep hearing the stories from funerals of friends and loved ones commenting on how much they loved the departed person.  Yes, this is good to be sure, but I can't help wondering if they said that while the person was alive.  Never wait to express your positive feelings toward someone.  Let them know you love them NOW.

Some kind things to do

Some kind things we can all do:  Donate time at a senior center.  Make a point of finding the name of a supermarket or drugstore employee who helped you, and then praise him/her through that company’s corporate office.  Tell your parents/children why you love them.  Share your smile generously.  Call or visit a homebound person.  As you go about your day, pick up trash.  Go through your closets and find several nice items and then donate them to a shelter.

Police brutality is real, even if that cop you know is kind and just. When I was young, I was taught to never speak ill of the dead.  Nowadays it seems to happen all the time.  I'm not suggesting we lie.  What I will suggest is that if we live a life of kindness, nobody will have a bad word to say about us.  For those who have already passed, is it necessary to speak of their faults?  Regardless of the way they lived, can we not remember them with love?

Friggatriskaidekaphobia, fear of Friday the 13th. Many reasons for this, but especially in numerology where twelve is considered the number of completeness (12 tribes of Israel, the 12 Apostles, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 days of Christmas, 12 hours of the clock, etc). The number thirteen is then considered a transgression, going beyond completeness. This day though doesn't have to be unlucky.  Be kind to yourself. Don't add unnecessary worry. Students and teachers at Georgia’s Apalachee High School, where a teenager carried out a deadly mass shooting yesterday, are on everyone's mind this morning. That certainly is the kind thing. In my opinion though tragedies like this should never occur. We need to all care more about our kids and their educators. School shootings can be prevented. First though we all have to CARE.

Here are some things we can all do to show kindness toward others: Volunteer to be a tutor in a school. Buy a pack of brightly colored stickers and give them to children you meet during the day. Let the person behind you in the grocery store go ahead of you in line. Invite someone new for dinner, either in your home or in a restaurant. Give toys to the children at a shelter. Say nice things randomly to friends on social media. twitter Buy some bottles of water and randomly hand them out to strangers on the street. Someone I know is ALWAYS late. Seriously. I have never seen him on time for anything. He'll invite me to do something with him and then I wait and wait and wait.  Is he coming?  One of the kindest and most respectful things we can all do is to be on time. How often do you receive mail?  I don't mean email or texts, but actual physical paper inside an envelope that is delivered by the Postal Service right to your door.  Folks don't do it nearly as much as they used to, and that's a shame.  It's such a kind thing to let someone know you are thinking of them and it's so nice to open a card from a friend!

Does "all by myself" work for you?  I know there are people who thrive on being all alone.  I am not one of them and I know that is true for many.  Have you ever felt lonely?  Some people are lonely all the time. What can we do about that?  Well, a phone call might help or a card in the mail.  A short visit can help usually be a good thing. We each have it in our power to help cut down on the loneliness out there.  Even folks who are new to town and don't know many people yet, can have lonely moments.

No worries

Have you noticed that retails employees don't say "you're welcome" these days? Most of the time it seems to be "no worries," which wouldn't bother me if I were Australian, but I'm not. I'd have no issue if they said "my pleasure." I might even prefer it. It's all about courtesy. "No worries" just seems way too indifferent to me. In courtesy, it's always better to take the high road.  "I'm so glad I didn't cause a problem or worry you," should not be what you are thinking.  Instead I want to feel glad I was there.  Wow!  She said it was her pleasure.  How nice!

The Call

Yesterday was a busy one for me.  At a bit before five though, everything became wonderful.  It was a caring person calling me on the phone that made everything so special.  People don't seem to take the time these days, for themselves or for each other.  I'm glad this friend took the time though and made that call.  It truly made my day!

Wonderful daughter

In the hallway of my apartment building I ran into a young woman whom I thought I had seen from a distance earlier.  "Are you a new neighbor of mine?" I asked.  No.  She was checking on her mom.  We chatted for a while because this women seemed so nice, it was almost impossible to believe.  She was coming over every two hours to put drops in her mother's eyes.  Normally she came a bit less but still was around a lot helping with chores, getting groceries, and just keeping Mom company.  I think that's pretty wonderful!

I can't tell you how often I hear that when someone passes away.  Why did they wait though?  Tell people what they mean to you now. Say it often, and not just with words.  Why wait until you are standing at someone's deathbed to let them know how you feel?

Bring food

I was watching a tv program from Australia the other day, and there was mention of taking a casserole to a neighbor.  How lovely.  It seems like we used to do that in this country.  Taking cookies, soup, or a casserole to a new neighbor, or someone who just lost a family member, or a friend who’s had a serious health diagnosis is such a kind thing to do.

Sometimes kindness comes unexpectedly from folks far away that we barely know. That happened to me last night, and it wasn't just one incident. The same person show concern for me over and over and some very nice actions followed. The beginning of a great friendship with this never-ending kindness actually brought tears to my eyes. I won't go into detail, but this made me very happy.

Kindness is something we do all the time, but some special kind acts?  Here's a few ideas:  Send dessert to another table when eating out.  Donate your old eyeglasses so someone else can use them.  Help a parent with their baby stroller.  Talk to the shy person who's sitting by themselves at a party.  Help someone with heavy packages.  Let the other person have the parking space, even if you arrived first.  Other ideas?

Oh Canada!

I regularly chat with a dear woman from Canada. Today, Canada Day, I am especially thinking of her. Formerly known as Dominion Day, today celebrates the anniversary of Canadian Confederation which occurred on July 1, 1867, with the passing of the British North America Act, when the three separate colonies of the United Canadas, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united into a single dominion called Canada.  Special kindness today to all our Canadian friends.

We don't make blood in labs.  When someone in a car accident needs blood, it comes from our donations.  If a cancer patient or a woman in childbirth needs blood, it comes from us.  One of the kindest things a person can do is to donate blood.  I have said this for years, and it is true.  Your blood donations truly save lives.  Think about becoming a blood donor.

He is such a loving and generous person, so I wasn't surprised that he responded to me for thanking him. He also said "your 'kindness blog' is lovely!"  I have no idea how many people actually read these words every day, but his kind words are certainly encouraging, and I am grateful.

Not that long ago

Bring coworkers a special treat.  Give the gift of your smile.  Tell a bus or taxi driver how much you appreciate their driving.  Draw names at work/school and have people bring a small gift or treat for their secret pal.  Deliver fresh-baked cookies or holiday candies to workers at government offices.  Sweep a neighbor's sidewalk.  Collect warm clothing during this cold season for those who don't have any.  So many ways we can all show kindness!

Discrimination is NOT kind

I will never understand discrimination in any form.  When I was little I remember the separate drinking fountains labeled "whites" and "colored."  I remember when guys with long hair were thought to be bad.  Oh yeah and there was the looks people gave when they encountered two people of different races together.  Banning gays in the military went on way too long and now apparently we are reintroducing a transgender ban.  Why?  I don't get it.  This is one of the most unkind things I can think of.  How can you ban an entire group of people?

Letha Sines is someone I will never forget.  She was my sixth grade teacher and gave us so much!  My aunt, who later became a teacher also, was a student of Miss Sines too.  Even my sister had the great experience of this wonderful teacher, although by her year in sixth grade, she had become Mrs Letha Munson.  I fondly remember Lou Ella Gridley who taught me in fifth grade too, and Mrs Doyle from the fourth grade.  I appreciate them all, and my numerous friends and relatives who went into teaching.  Such a giving profession!

Want to hear some amazing numbers?  Every 2 seconds someone in the United States needs blood and or platelets. Approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the US and nearly 5,000 units of platelets and 6.500 units of plasma are needed. Wow!  Blood cannot be made in a lab.  When blood is needed it comes from the kind and caring donors who truly save lives.  That's why I mention it here so often.

No war

War is never a good thing. There is currently fighting going on in Myanmar, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Lebanon, Sudan, and several other countries. Yesterday there was talk of another world war. This is nothing new. Throughout history there has been fighting and killing, but it doesn't have to be this way. We can actually sit down and work out our differences. We can actually respect each other and be kind. We can, but we don't. I really don't understand it. Let's all say, "no war" and mean it.

The things I see

It really warms my heart when I witness the kindness of others.  Despite all the negative news we hear, I am seeing more and more nice gestures, often by strangers.  The other day I got up to pay for my breakfast at the restaurant where I occasionally treat myself in the morning, and the hostess told me a couple that had just left had paid for me.  I have no idea who they were, but this is what kindness is all about.  I am truly grateful!

Remembering Ewing

It was only in the last several years of his life that I knew him, but the kindness he showed toward me, my mother, and every single person he met was inspiring.  Ewing was a genuinely nice man, and from the stories I heard from those who had known him longer, he had always been nice.  He was an adventurer too, having hopped a freight train and traveled across the country in his younger days.  He was also a man of great faith - always active in his church, and in his community.  Memories of Ewing will always stay with me.

The Lead Singer

Easter is a favorite of mine too.  Every December, as Christmas draws near, I look forward to the holiday celebrations.  One of the big things I look forward to every single day is seeing friends and neighbors, chatting with strangers, seeing smiles and acts of kindness. I will never tire of seeing people do nice things for each other.  I'm always looking forward to something!

Kind nurse

Due to a lengthy hospital stay, a man was forced to give his dog to the local animal shelter. In an act of great kindness, one of his nurses went to the shelter and adopted his dog. She brings the dog to visit him daily, and when the man is discharged from hospital, she plans to give the dog back to him.  True story that warms my heart!

Good Samaritan Day

The term "good Samaritan" comes from the Bible parable where a Samaritan helped a stranger who had been robbed and beaten and left to die by the side of the road. Today is National Good Samaritan Day recognizing the unselfish actions of those who provide help when it is needed. The day is also known as Good Samaritan Involvement Day and celebrates kindness in all its forms.

Hospital Hugs

I was working my volunteer shift at hospital yesterday when an outpatient (there for some tests) came up to me and asked if I remembered her.  I sure did!  Her husband had been a patient there several years ago and knowing he was in his last days, she tried to stay positive and one day asked if I would give her a hug.  Well it became a regular thing.  Lots of hugs.  One day in the cafeteria she walked up to where I was sitting with tears streaming down her face.  Her husband had died.  We hugged.  Yesterday she told me I had been a big help and thanked me.  We hugged once again.

Soup It Forward

When my mom made a pot of soup, it was nearly always enough to feed an army. I think that's true for most of us, so how about sharing?  Deliver a nice hot pot of your delicious chicken noodle or split pea to a family or friend in need, or to someone under the weather.  Today is National Soup it Forward Day on encouraging us to deliver love and kindness by the bowlful.  I could go for a nice hot pot of potato soup!

Do we do kind things so that people will like us or so we will get attention?  I hope not!  Being kind is part of who we are.  It comes naturally.  No special reward is necessary.  Nobody needs to give us credit for our kind acts.  Truly kind people don't need to be the center of attention.

kindness at the concerts

It seems just about every day I hear about some kind thing that singer Arnel Pineda has done.  He really connects with his audience at concerts, and I just saw pictures from two different venues where he was posing with a little boy.  You know those kids were probably at their first concerts and that warm happy memory will stay with them forever.  Thanks for making a difference, Arnel!

in times of anxiety

In times of anxiety and when we are experiencing extreme stress do you know what helps calm your anxious thoughts?  Kindness.  Yup.  Here is just one more reason why being kind is so good.  I have heard this from experts and also experienced it myself.  If a court ruling has you frustrated; if crime in the streets has made you tense; if there is stress in your life due to hatred and injustice, try doing something especially nice for someone.  I don't mean to minimize life's problems, and we certainly should work on correcting the ills of society, but a kind act can also be a wonderful tonic.
