Beautiful lawns and gardens

The groundskeepers where I live do excellent work. The lawns are always exceptional and the flowers and trees so incredibly beautiful. Yesterday, one of the men was packing up tools at the end of the day and I complimented him on the way they had just changed the plants and the rocks surrounding the parking area. "Oh you're too kind." he said. Was that kindness? I was just speaking the truth. Maybe we should all do that a bit more often.

Tradition

There isn't a single holiday decoration up at my apartment and I haven't sent out any Christmas cards.  I do celebrate.  What am I waiting for then?  Well, I'm very traditional.  It isn't Christmas yet.  I'll be putting up a tree next week, and I will be singing carols, just not yet.  I'm very traditional when it comes to kindness too.  Oh how important it is to be nice to folks!  Oh and I mean always, not just during the holidays!

Saint Nicholas

The sixth of December is celebrated as the feast day of Saint Nicholas, and it has nothing to do with Christmas.  The legend tells of three bags of gold coins.  Whether or not it is true is really not important.  What Nicholas has come to represent is good honest giving with no expectation of anything in return.  That's what kindness is all about.  We should be kind because we want people to be kind to us.  We should do it because it is good and proper and because it makes other people feel good.  Today, think of Saint Nicholas as you do kind things and expect nothing at all in return.  You WILL get something.  You'll get a wonderful feeling!

We remember two great men today, both of whom happen to have been gay. It was 45 years ago that Harvey Milk was murdered on this date. Four years ago, on this date Louie Clay passed away. Harvey is remembered for saying, "Gotta give em hope." Louie is remembered for saying, "Joy, anyway!" Hope and joy. We all need both in our lives. They are the cousins of love and kindness.

Remembering Mrs Carter

Yesterday, Rosalynn Carter writer, activist and humanitarian and former First Lady of the United States, passed away.  She will certainly be remembered for her kindness and for her wisdom.  Mrs Carter once said. "There are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers."  At one time or another, she was all four.

Do you ever just need someone around to hear you? Sometimes, especially in times of crisis, the thing you need the most is someone to talk to. They don't have to talk back. How wonderful it is to have a person who can simply sit in silence and listen to those who need a listening ear. In times of worry or sorrow or loneliness, this is particularly true. Listening to another person is a great act of kindness.

There seems to be a trend these days to not say thank you.  Oh my!  How unkind!  If someone does something special for you, acknowledge it.  Let them know you are grateful.  This is especially true when someone gives you a nice present or money.  Oh and if you donate to a charity, there should be a thank you too!  Money should always be acknowledged in writing too.  It's polite.  It's kind.

Bring back the welcome wagon

There was a time when neighbors welcomed new neighbors.  If someone was moving in to a house of apartment close by, you dropped by with a fruit basket, some fresh bread, or maybe a nice cake.  Sometimes individuals did it and sometimes it was part of an organized official "welcome wagon."  One things is certain though - it was a very kind gesture!

Open the door for another person. Leave an extra-large tip for your server.  Treat someone to fresh fruit. Tell a bus or taxi driver how much you appreciate their driving. Give coffee to people on their way to work in the morning. Leave a treat or handmade note of thanks for a delivery person or mail carrier.  Sing at a nursing home. Give another driver your parking spot.  Give a bag of groceries to a homeless person.

With so much road rage, be different. When drivers try to merge into your lane, let them in with a wave and a smile. Say something nice to every single person you encounter today. Volunteer at an organization that could use your help. The ideas are endless!

Sad news

I just learned the sad news that someone I have worked with took his own life earlier this week. He was such a bright star and will certainly be missed. It's hard to believe that he is gone, and even harder that it was as a result of suicide. Every life is important.

Moral support

Last night I received a message from a future leader.  He was sad that he couldn't make a monetary donation to a fundraiser I am participating in, and said "At the very least, you know you have my moral support!"  Least?  Oh my!  Moral support is so important!  This is one of the kindest, nicest people I know, and he is always involved in programs that make life better.  Here he was worried he wasn't giving what he wanted, when in reality, he was giving a truly great gift for which I will be forever grateful.

Happy birthday Jimmy Carter!

James Earl Carter Jr. was born October 1, 1924, in Plains, GA, at the Wise Sanitarium (the first American president born in a hospital), the son of Bessie Lillian Gordy and James Earl Carter Sr.  He was the nation's 39th President, but I think he is known more for his great kindness all that he gives back.  Today he turns 99! Happy birthday Jimmy Carter and thank you so much for making a difference!

Everyone is important

Every single person  is important. Learn the names of the folks you regularly come in contact with (the receptionist, the driver on a regular bus you take, a security guard in your lobby, the server who pours your coffee) and greet them all by name. Say “hello” to strangers too, and smile. These are very simple acts of kindness and they almost always make people smile.

Using all your talent

Erma Bombeck was a very talented women. Remember her? She worked on the Equal Rights Amendment, appeared regularly on tv (including Good Morning America), wrote over 4,000 newspaper columns, and published fifteen books. Bombeck died way too early after enduring many health problems, but she gave us so much and did so in a fun way. She was always kind and encouraging and shared things that were simple to understand. One thing that stands out in my mind is when she said "When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, I used everything you gave me." In Erma Bombeck's case, that was certainly true.

Can you think of some random ways to show kindness to others? How about these: As you go about your day, pick up trash. Call or visit a homebound person. Make a point of finding the name of a supermarket or drugstore employee and then praise him/her through that company’s corporate office. When drivers try to merge into your lane, let them in with a wave and a smile. Tell your boss that you think he/she does a good job. Pay a compliment at least once a day. Donate blood. Random acts of kindness

Every now and then I have listed things we can all do to show kindness toward others. Here are some more: Volunteer to be a tutor in a school. Buy a pack of brightly colored stickers and give them to children you meet during the day. Let the person behind you in the grocery store go ahead of you in line. Invite someone new for dinner, either in your home or in a restaurant. Give toys to the children at a shelter. Say nice things randomly to Facebook friends. Buy some bottles of water and randomly hand them out to strangers on the street. Drop off a plant or a plate of cookies to your nearby police or fire station. Please add your own ideas below!

Inspiration

She brought doughnuts

Yesterday I was at a training for hospital volunteers.  (I've already been volunteering, but going to an occasional meeting helps me to stay fresh, and also meet any new folks).  The person making the presentation is also a volunteer and she does such an amazing job.  She even brought doughnuts!  The kindness was so visible in every direction.

at the store

The other day while I was at the store, the lady in front of me was having trouble paying.  She presented a VISA card, but the store doesn't accept VISA.  She was traveling from Canada and it seems the only cash she had was Canadian.  She kept apologizing but really had done nothing wrong.  I asked how much it all cost and it was only fourteen dollars and some change, so I handed the cashier a twenty dollar bill.  You would think I had just given her a new car!  Both the lady and the cashier kept thanking me.  The lady then offered to give me the equivalent in Canadian currency.  Nope.  That's fine.  Glad I could help.  And that was that.  I just know this lady will be helping someone else one day!

Arnel's Foundation

Journey's fantastic lead singer Arnel Pineda did something even more fantastic than his singing, he founded the Arnel Pineda Foundation, Inc! It's a charity organization based in the Philippines and from what I read it is doing amazing things for the kids there. Now I don't know Mr Pineda at all and my only information is what I read, but he seems to have performed an incredible act of kindness and generosity. The world could use more folks like that.

Red hot kindness

During the summer months where I live, it can get pretty hot.  We have reached the triple digits every day lately.  Heat can do many things to people, but don't be overcome by it.  Remember the sunscreen and the water.  A kind thing to do would be to have extra to share with someone who might forget.  (Drugstores often have trial size sunscreen and water comes in all sizes these days).  Many cities have cooling centers on those very hot days.  Don't let yourself get overheated, and if you encounter someone who has, seek assistance for them.

I see kindness expressed through donations all the time.  During the year I raise funds for various causes, and it warms my heart when folks contribute.  Recently someone I don't even know gave a large monetary gift.  I see lots of donations come in at the hospital where I volunteer too.  People give money and there are also a lot of donations of used books and magazines, and of course donations of time.

Did you ever have someone tell you how many things they had done for you and how you now owe them?  In my way of thinking, they gave you nothing at all. Gifts don't come with strings attached. Of course if is always very nice to do kind things for those who have done kind things for you, but that should not be your reason. Actually no reason is necessary at all. Give out of the love in your heart, and expect nothing in return. That is the real joy.

We're supposed to be different

How can we discriminate against an entire group of people? I don't get it. When I was little I remember the drinking fountains labeled "colored" and "white."  (I actually used the colored one once in a store, thinking the water was colored, and boy did I get yelled at by the racist storekeeper). These days I see more discrimination based on religious affiliation or gender identity, and I still don't get it. We're supposed to be different. That is part of the beauty of life. We are supposed to discriminate though, because despite all of our many differences, we still are all equal!

If a woman asks you about the hideous dress she is wearing, there is no great need for you to say it is ugly.  If you are her spouse or a close friend, you might make a suggestion about how she might improve her appearance, but this is one of those times when it is okay to skirt the truth.  Oh and if she didn't ask, what does it accomplish if you simply blurt out that the dress is ugly?  The kind thing to do is sometimes to simply keep your mouth shut.

Sometimes I wonder how many people have actually read the Declaration of Independence. In the second paragraph, you'll find these words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Now please note there is no asterisk. It doesn't say except for people of color or people with blue eyes or people who are gay or Jewish people or transgender or any other exception. It says ALL!

Some random acts of kindkess

Let the person behind you in the grocery store go ahead of you in line. Say nice things randomly to friends on social media. Buy some bottles of water and randomly hand them out to strangers on the street. Volunteer for a cause or campaign that is important to you. Clean graffiti from neighborhood walls and buildings. Leave a treat or handmade note of thanks for a delivery person or mail carrier. Give another driver your parking spot. There are so many random acts of kindness.  Can you think of others?

Remember me

Some things we can achieve in life, and other things are out of our hands. We can try to be the richest or the best looking or the tallest or the fastest, but what do any of those things really mean? Years after someone meets me, I'd prefer for them to remember that I was nice to them. They don't have to recall my sense of humor or my incredible physique. I'd much rather have them remember that I was kind to them, and to others.

Invisible people

There was a time - there really was, when folks spoke to each other. More and more it seems like people are texting or otherwise involved with some electronic device. You can say hello to someone and be ignored and you can smile and offer a cheery "Good Morning!" without even a return glance in your direction. It can make you feel invisible! When someone smiles back though, it make a huge difference. When you are noticed, the feeling of kindness can melt your heart.  We are not invisible people!

Keep at it

Never give up is one of my long held beliefs. My values aren't something I change several times a day, as I might change my clothes. I have to stay true to my principles, even if others don't join in. The test for me is simple: is it the kind, just, and fair path. If it is unkind, if it is not fair, if it doesn't treat everyone equally and justly, then it must be wrong. Activism is not a four letter word though and I will not be swayed by threats or setbacks. When it is the right thing to do, I will keep at it, and I will keep urging others to join in.

Children's television host Fred Rogers said some remarkable things which often come to mind, like "Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero to me."  He also said more about heroes:  "We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility.  It's easy to say 'It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.'  Then there are those who see the need and respond.  I consider those people my heroes.'  I agree.  One more thing though - to me, Mister Rogers was also a hero.

Kindness even toward those we dislike

Many people are of the opinion that they must never show any kindness to those with whom they disagree or those they dislike.  Nope.  We can be kind to everyone.  Let them do they negative.  We can strive to take the high road.  Sometimes it's just a matter of common courtesy, but being kind and extending a positive attitude should always be they way we operate.  Who knows?  We just might bring about change in those other people!

Remember when folks always opened a door for a woman? How about when people see someone else coming and keep the door open for you? Remember? Oh and if you saw someone running to catch the elevator you are on, same thing. It doesn't seem to happen as much as it once did. Something as simple as holding the door open can make someone's day. It really can, and it's such an easy kind act!

Up on Crumhorn Mountain

I was thinking this morning of a Boy Scout Camp nearly a century old, on Crumhorn Mountain in Upstate New York.  As a scout, I spent a lot of time there.  I learned about nature and about kindness and about how to get along with others.  The scouts back then did a lot of good things, but they excluded a lot of kids too.  I think they have improved.  I think they have finally learned more about kindness.

May Day

There was once a big deal made of the first day of May.  In small towns especially, small baskets filled with homemade bread or cookies, cut flowers, or other goodies, would be left at someone's doorstep. You would set down the basket, ring the doorbell, and run away.  Of course there are other May Day traditions in the various places where it is celebrated, but this one seems to be such a lovely act of kindness.  I think it would be a nice random thing to do any day!

Great memories from seniors

I often wish I'd spend more time with Grandpa. Nana and I did things together, and she lived much longer and was quite active.  Senior citizens are often alone, but have so much to share. Nana got out and kept busy, but that's not true of many as they get older.  A day in a retirement community can be very rewarding, and can brighten the day for them.  I like chatting with elders and asking them to share memories - how has the world changed during your life? can you remember your first date? Sharing memories helps both us and them stay connected.

Kind bars

You have probably heard of kind bars.  They are healthy snacks - energy bars, and have become quite popular.  I'm not promoting them (although I should - they not only taste good, but are good for you), but a funny image just popped into my head.  Instead of thinking of a supplemental bar containing cereals, nuts and such, I was picturing that type of bar where folks go for a cocktail, but instead of libations the bartenders dispense kindness and various ways.  Oh wait!  That might describe this blog.  WE are a kind bar!

Random acts

Here we go with some more random acts of kindness.  Buy a pack of brightly colored stickers and give them to children you meet during the day.  Invite someone new for dinner, either in your home or in a restaurant.  Share your smile generously.  Buy some bottles of water and randomly hand them out to strangers on the street.  Clean graffiti from neighborhood walls and buildings.  Buy a stranger a free pizza.  Mow a neighbor’s grass or sweep a neighbor’s walk.  Offer to return a shopping cart to the store for someone loading a car.

We love our animals

Although my sister has loved all the dogs she has had over the years, there was a very special pug she called Bug.  I think he was her favorite of all.  I know he was a favorite of my.  The other night Bug ran into the street and was hit by a car and killed.  I can't tell you how many kind wishes have been sent my sister's way.  Pets aren't human, but they do become part of the family.  We love our animals and that's how it should be.  Thank you to everyone who shares the love!

My elderly neighbor

Sometimes I worry about folks who live all alone, especially those in advanced years, but there is no need to worry about my elderly neighbor.  Folks are always dropping by for short visits to say hello.  Some offer to take him on errands and others bring food or other goodies for him to enjoy.  The other day he told me he felt like a lucky guy with so many kind people in his life.  Indeed!

I'm probably an oddball, but I love the winter!  The cold months are my favorite and where I live we recently had a big snowfall, which was so pretty to look at.  Of course there are nice things about the spring too and that is just days away.  I love seeing flowers poking their way through the snow!  Maybe I'll send some flowers today.  That's not such an oddball thing.  Everyone loves flowers!

Specific acts

Being kind is so many different things.  Some people try to think up specific acts.  I do that sometimes myself.  Being nice can be a pleasant greeting and a smile.  I like to think of it as a way of life.  Those random acts of kindness can be such powerful tools though to help us stay on the path.  Even the nicest people need encouragement sometimes and intentionally doing something kind is great tonic to keep us moving forward.

See a neighbor struggling with her groceries?  See a homeless person asking for a donation?  See the coworker who has just lost his spouse?  See the troubled individual who is all alone?  Reach out!  Don't let anyone need to be alone.  Give the best gift you possibly can - the gift of your kind presence.  Being there for others is such a rewarding gift.

More random acts of kindness

Pay a compliment at least once a day.  Transport someone who can’t drive.  Make telephone calls in support of equality urging others to put aside hate.  Say something nice to everyone you meet today.  Tell your children why you love them.  Call or visit a homebound person.  Send a treat to a school or day-care center.  Volunteer at an organization that needs help.  Go through your closets and find several nice items and then donate them to a shelter.
