Tick Tock

The clock is ticking.  Tick tock.  Another year is just about over.  Was there something you had planned to do but haven't gotten to?  Can you still get to it before we turn the calendar page?  I hope it was a kind year for you.  Let's make next year even better!

Love this time of year

Oh how I love this time of year!  The holiday season always seems to bring out the best in people, huh?  Perhaps one of our resolutions can be to show our best (especially our kindness) all year long!

notes of thanks

There was a time when folks would automatically write thank you notes when they received gifts.  Oh how lovely it would be for that custom to return.  Did you receive any holiday cards or presents?  The kind thing is to acknowledge them right away and to say thank you.  I know I am grateful.

Lights and decorations

I love the lights and decorations that we find this time of year.  Someone was kind enough to take me to see some decorations that I would have missed.  Lovely!  How does your neighborhood look?  Did you add anything to the colorful decorating?  My mom used to decorate all year.  After Christmas she would change to a winter theme, then would come Valentine's Day, spring, Easter, and summer.  I love dressing up areas for each time of year.

Holidays Galore

Today might not be a legal holiday where you live but a number of observances occur every December 26.  It is of course the second day of Christmas, but it is also Boxing Day, Saint Stephen's Day, the first day of Kwanzaa, and in some parts of the world it is Day of Goodwill.  It's that last one I especially take note of - goodwill is such a very good thing!

Almost

Almost.  Christmas is almost here.  Tomorrow is Christmas Eve.  Of course we still have several other holidays to come too.  Enjoy them all!

Flowers for my mom

My mom passed away five years ago, and I now live in another stare so can't go and visit her final resting place when I would like to, like her birthday yesterday.  Someone else did though.  Someone who never knew Mom and scarcely knows me, went and placed flowers on her grace.  What a kind thing to do!

My Mom

I've mentioned my mother here before on a number of occasions.  She certainly was one of my kindness guides.  Now more than five years after she passed away, I still hear people who knew her remark about how kind she was.  What a great way to be remembered!  Today would have been her 92nd birthday, and I think of her with love.

Preparations

This is when I get heavily into preparations for various celebrations.  I do the traditional twelve days of Christmas (from December 25th until January 5th), but I have to have certain things on hand, so this is when I usually shop for special things, especially food.  It is also the eve of what was my mom's birthday, so I used to always be thinking of that.  Oh and a little extra cleaning to get everything ready.  With all those preparations, I like to prepare some extra kindness too.  Sometimes this time of year can be difficult for some folks, and I certainly want to help make things better!

Not the 4th day of Christmas

Nope, this is not the 4th day of Christmas!  Everyone seems to be rushing things.  (If you doubt me, look it up).  Christmas doesn't END December 25th, that's when it begins.  This is however another day to be kind.  That my friends is something we can enjoy every single day!

Health update

Normally I don't like talking about me, but last week I mentioned being in the hospital and some folks have asked questions.  Thanks for your concern.  I do appreciate it, but not to worry.  It was just a minor thing.  I somehow became a bit dehydrated.  I'm fine now though!  Another great example of kindness though is you concern.  Thanks again!

More cookies

Someone brought some freshly baked cookies to work again yesterday.  What a kind (and delicious) thing to do!

In the beginning

"Of being kind, I have a few things to say.  Sometimes here I might share inspirational quotes and at other times I'll put forth ideas about kindness and how together we just might brighten up the world.  Hopefully this will help to brighten up things for YOU.  Do feel free to share these posts and your comments below are always welcome as well.  Of being kind, there are so many ways!  Let's use them all up!"    Those were the first words I wrote here back in the beginning.  How many of you have been reading since then?  How many of you share this with friends?

Kindness from the hospital

Today's post almost didn't happen.  I'm in the hospital.  Not to worry.  It isn't life-threatening.  I told them I write a daily blog which I never miss, so they have to discharge me.  (I had nothing with me, not even a phone, when I was admitted).  Well my nurse couldn't get me released - that will probably happen in the next few hours though, but she let me use her tablet.  What a a great example of kindness!

Welcome Sunday Morning!

Let us all welcome Sunday morning!  Oh course it is wonderful to welcome each day with enthusiasm, but for me, Sundays are special.  It is after all the beginning of the week.  Enjoy the day.  Enjoy the week ahead.  Be kind to yourself, and most certainly, be kind to everyone!

Senator Dole's tribute

One of the most emotional moments I have ever seen was yesterday in Washington when former Senator Robert Dole was helped out of his wheelchair and saluted the casket of Former President George Herbert Walker Bush in the Capitol Rotunda.  It was a kind gesture to be sure and it was heartwarming.  Sometimes with politics we get to caught up in policy and we forget about our shared humanity.  Thank you Senator Dole for a very moving tribute.

cookie day

Guess what today is.  (I can smell them baking in the oven).  Today is National Cookie Day.  Yum!  That gives me dozens of ideas relating to kindness.  Can you think of some too?  Let's brighten the day for some people with cookies!

loving December

I am loving December!  Is it because Hanukkah is upon us and Christmas and Kwanzaa are soon to be here too?  Is it the lights and the parties and the sales?  Is it the happier attitude that descends on so many of us?  Is it because folks seem to always be kinder around this time of year?  Maybe it's all of these things!

Today there's a difference

Many of you won't notice but today there's a difference in this blog.  Generally I rise before the sun and take a walk or run, and then refreshed from my morning ablutions, I enjoy some hot coffee while saying something here about kindness.  Normally that would have happened a couple of hours ago, but today I slept late, something I never do.  I'm fine.  I feel well rested.  I'm just late.  Like I said, most of you wouldn't even notice, but I do.  Let's all be extra kind!

Remembering and looking forward

Remembering those days when I went to a funeral five or six times a week, or made trips to Ward 86, or stood in the cold air with hundreds or others, holding a candle. Remembering the rallies, the marches, the speeches, the AIDSWalks, the quilt panels, and the meetings.  Remembering the kindness of strangers and all the folks who cared.  On this World AIDS Day, doing a lot of remembering and looking forward to the end of AIDS.

Give and Remember

Of your kindness, take a moment today to remember the organizations that make a difference in your life and if you are able, donate some time or money to them.  Today is Giving Tuesday and likely you will hear a lot about giving.  I hope you will also remember all those who make this organizations happen.  Remember also two men who were slain on this date forty years ago, San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.  May their legacy continue to inspire.

A+

I'm always grateful for your feedback and I especially love it when folks respond to my questions.  Yesterday I gave a homework assignment and (you might have already read his comment, but just in case you didn't) some very wse words were shared:  "If we can each look within, love ourself more, find the compassion and acceptance within ourselves, then we will make ourselves more loving and kind. If we can each do this, then collectively, we will create a better world by making ourselves better, kinder, and more compassionate."  Thanks so much Andrew for this and your previous comments.  You get an A+ on this assignment.  You also have truly inspired me!

Three times this month

I have no idea how often folks read these words.  There is a counter that tells me who many people click here, but I don't know if they actually read my words, and I certainly don't know what they think.  One of the kindest things a person can do is to give feedback, and three times this month, a comment has been left.  I so appreciate your kind words.  On Wednesday an anonymous reader wrote "Wonderful thoughts! I am grateful for this blog."  Thanks!  I hope you will keep on reading!

Let's continue to be thankful

Yesterday was Thanksgiving Day of course, but why stop being thankful?  Why race ahead to a holiday that is still more than a month away.  Today is traditionally one of the least kind days of the year, as people push and shove to buy things they don't really need and end up obscuring the warm celebration we just had.  Today, let's begin a new custom.  Let's continue to be thankful and let us bring kindness everywhere we go!

spread the turkey around

One of the biggest feasts of the year.  Families serve more food on Thanksgiving Day than at any other time, but what happens with all the leftovers?  Please don't throw away good food!  Make some dinner plates or turkey sandwiches and share them with homeless people, shut-ins, or folks you know who will be alone.  A slice of cake or piece of pie will be joyously received too!

Wednesday, November 21, 2018

all week and all month

Many folks are already looking ahead to Christmas or other December holidays.  For me though it's one day and it's this month.  I love Thanksgiving - I always have.  People have been talking about it all week - all month.  Yes, the meal is wonderful and getting together with family and friends is always great, but I like the giving of thanks.  There is so much to be grateful for.  For me, it's not just what I do tomorrow, but every day.  Kindness is important every day, and so is gratitude!

Kindness of Ellen

I think the first time I ever saw Ellen DeGeneres was on Johnny Carson's old Tonight Show, and I have loved her ever since. She's a fine actress, comedian, and television host, but there is much more. She makes a difference. Ellen is famous for ending her tv show with "Be kind to one another." It's not just a saying though - she means it, and you can see numerous ways she practices what she preaches, every single day.  How many checks has she given to needy people on her program?  Oh my!

Sunday, November 18, 2018

Can you smell the turkey yet?

It's just a few days until Thanksgiving.  Can you smell the turkey yet?  I know many folks get started early.  If it were up to me, every day would be a day of thanksgiving.  We do have a lot to be thankful for!  Think about it this week.

Richelle Goodrich says

In her book Making Wishes, Richelle Goodrich says that "Kindness is a magical spell - performed by enlightened beings - meant to enchant hearts and lift weary souls that they might fly."  Oh my!  What a beautiful way of saying it!

Teddy bears

My mom collected teddy bears and I have a large amount of those bears in my home.  How can you look at or hold a teddy bear and not feel happy?  Well I mention this because today is American Teddy Bear Day.  Celebrate!

hashtag

There have already been a whole bunch of tweets on twitter and posts on other social media, but World Kindness Day is not just a hashtag.  The goal of course is just like mine, to spread kindness throughout the world every day.  A special day though is a good beginning.  Let's all see how many kind things we can do today!

Monday, November 12, 2018

November 12

Yes, today is November 12th, but what else?  Monday, yes.  It is of course another day to show kindness toward others.  I never get tired of saying that.  I hope the world grows a bit kinder each day!

Sunday, November 11, 2018

those who serve

Today is Veterans Day in the United States, a day set aside to honor all who have served in our military.  Honoring them does not mean you are in favor of conflict or war.  Show them some love and kindness today.

Saturday, November 10, 2018

Over two years

Over two years ago I began writing this blog and each morning I say something here about kindness.  Many of you probably thought I would tire out by now, huh?  We must never get tired of being kind though.  Kindness makes the world a better place!

The Kind Bus Driver

The weather is getting colder where I live, and a local bus driver I know told me that one of her daily passengers boarded the other day, blowing on her hands and commenting on how cold they were.  The driver stopped by a dollar store at the end of her shift and purchased some gloves that were two pair for a dollar.  These weren't fancy elegant gloves, but they are protection from the elements.  Yesterday she gave them to her passenger and told me the lady was delighted.  Such a simple act of kindness not only helped one person, but also inspired me!

VOTE

I'm always talking about kindness, and I hope I am always doing kind things.  Being kind to our neighbors, kind to animals, kind to the land and to the spaces that surround us - this is all part of our civic duty. So is voting.  Today is Election Day and each one of us has a voice.  Be heard my friends.  VOTE!

Goodbye friend

A very dear kind man passed away this week and I will miss him.  Last night as I reflected on his life all I could think of was the nice generous way in which he had lived.  What a wonderful way to be remembered.  I hope I can learn a lot from his example.

Stop the shootings

Returning from my morning walk, I was listening to news of yet another shooting.  One student was shot and another student was taken into custody at a North Carolina high school first thing today. There have been 47,221 gun incidents in the US this year, resulting in 11,985 deaths.  THIS MUST STOP!  It's not safe to go to school or to church or temple.  Sad.  Very sad.  We must make this a priority.

The hate must end

Eight men and three women, including a pair of brothers and a married couple, were murdered yesterday inside the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA.  I spend a lot of time speaking about kindness, but I simply must address this latest incident of hate.  Too many lives are lost.  Too many families are injured.  There is no good thing that comes from hate.  We need to return to kindness and love.  The hate must end.  This has to become a priority!

Saturday, October 27, 2018

yummy chocolate

Tomorrow is National Chocolate Day!  Of course it is not the only chocolate day.  We had another one on July 7th and then there was International Chocolate Day on September 13th.  Oh and don't forget the chocolate that will come up on Wednesday for Halloween.  Don't you think every day could be chocolate day?  It's just like kindness - there is never too much!

Friday, October 26, 2018

Boo

I have been seeing so many costumes lately and a lot of early trick-or-treating.  Yes, we used to confine it to October 31st, but what's the harm in a few extra days?  Be kind to the kids and to those who sponsor Halloween events.  We can all use some more fun!

Trans Kindness

Civil rights protections have expanded over the years, to better include transgender people, and in fact to better include all people, but in the past day or so a very troubling reversal has come.  The White House is responsible for an effort that would narrow the definition of gender to male or female, and for that assignment to be unchangeable from birth.  This is not only unkind, it is downright cruel.  You cannot erase an entire segment of the population.  Protections should be unnecessary, but meanspirited attacks like this threaten us all.

Friday, October 19, 2018

candycorn

It seems you only see candy corn at this time of year.  I love those sweet colorful candies.  Let's get the candy manufacturers to show a little kindness and have this available all year long.

Pay Back A Friend

I'm told it was a bank promotion that brought about today's Pay Back A Friend Day, but whoever did it, I like the idea.  It doesn't have to mean pay back money.  It can also acknowledge the many things our friends to for us that we often take for granted.  Today, let's be aware of all the giving and be sure to also give back.

Tuesday, October 16, 2018

Wear Something Gaudy

Want another fun observance?  Well tomorrow is Wear Something Gaudy Day!  I kid you not.  Doing silly fun things can certainly brighten our days, so why not?  In your kindness share that crazy hat or boa with a friend or co-worker.  Before you go to bed tonight, go through your closet and find something really outrageous to wear tomorrow.

Sunday, October 14, 2018

volunteer to be kind

Yesterday I was at a women's health fair with the hospital where I volunteer.  What a wonderful event.  I saw so much kindness and so many people were thanking me and my fellow volunteers for our service.  Giving my time really makes me feel good, and it is also a great feeling to be appreciated.

come out

Today is National Coming Out Day, and while lgbtq visibility is important, so is the visibility of allies.  Want to know what is even more important?  Equality.  Let's make this a world where everyone is treated equally with kindness and mutual respect.

Bring your teddy bear

Today is National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work/School Day (observed on the second Wednesday of every October).   I don't really know how or why this came about, but I have a huge collection of teddy bears (which were my mom's) and anything that has to do with these cute creatures has to be nice and kind!

Smile Day

World Smile Day is celebrated on the first Friday in October every year.  It was the idea of  coined Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, who also created the Smiley Face back in 1963.  We can never have too many smiles, right?  Share the kindness and the smiles and thank Harvey for urging us on!

Monday, October 1, 2018

Wear Blue

Blue Shirt Day is a World Day of Bullying Prevention, which takes place annually on the first Monday of every October.  All students and school employees are asked to wear a blue shirt as a visible sign of unity against bullies.  Sadly, bullying isn't confined to schools and so wear blue wherever you are and show love and kindness toward everyone.  So no to all bullying!

Saturday, September 29, 2018

Be an angel

In some churches and in some parts of the world, the Archangel Michael is remembered today.  Some folks commemorate ALL angels.  There is also Guardian Angel Day coming up on October 2nd.  Whether or not you observe any of these, it's a perfect time to BE and angel and show some extra kindness!

It's our anniversary

Do you know what today is?  It's our anniversary!  Two years ago on this date, I began writing this daily blog.  I don't know if it has had an effect of anyone, but I know it has done things for me.  I now think more often about kind acts and hopefully have become a kinder person.

Remembering Wilson

Wilson Fernandez Fang was one of the kindest people I ever met.  He was always doing things for others and making a difference in the world.  Wilson's generosity, caring, and unwavering faith in God endeared him to just about everyone he met.  I miss him and think of him often.  His memory helps me remember the importance of being kind to one another.  It was three years ago on this date that Wilson was born to eternal life.  Rest in peace dear friend.

More cherries

Today is National Cherries Jubilee Day, not to be confused with Cherry Popover Day which began the month. (The cherry farmers must have a good agency backing them up, huh)? Anyway, how kind it would be to make a nice cherries jubilee for your family and your friends! Wow.

Gratitude Day

Back in 1965 at the International East-West Center in Hawaii during a Thanksgiving Dinner, those in attendance decided to hold a gratitude gathering the following September 21st in their various home countries. What grew out of that meal is an annual event now, and an excellent idea.  There is so much to be grateful for, huh?  Think about that today.  To whom do you wish to show gratitude?

National Respect Day

I cannot get the song out of my head
R - E - S - P - E - C - T

Don't just sing about it though.  Today is National Respect Day and one of the kindest things we can do is to show respect for others!

Happy Sunday!

Is Sunday your favorite day of the week?  It is for many because it is the day when more folks are away from work, school, or other obligations.  Sundays can be extra happy too because we can use some of that extra time to put smiles on faces, even the faces of strangers.  Church, a ballgame, a stroll through the park - see how many places you can bring happiness today!

Saturday, September 15, 2018

Middle of the month

I can't believe it's the middle of the month already!  Next thing you know we will be drinking pumpkin spice lattes!  (Oh, that already started)?  There's a feeling of fall in the air.  I so many places, this is one of the most beautiful times of the year.  Mother nature is so kind to us, be sure to return the favor.  Be kind to the environment.  Enjoy the beauty of the earth and share that beauty with others.

Heigh-ho! Come to the fair!

Across from where I live they have been working for days. It's the County Fair and it opens today! What a great place for happy moments and a good helping of kindness. Do you ever go to your county fair? Always a lot of fun. Heigh-ho! Come to the fair!

Be gentle

There is no rulebook for grieving.  We all do it in different ways.  While the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 that claimed nearly 3,000 and injured over 6,000 others, are now seventeen years in our past, it is still a difficult day for many.  Be gentle with folks today.  Their mourning may be different than yours.  Never forget to horror of that day and remember that the solution to hate, is love.

Today's the day

I don't know who created National Teddy Bear Day, but today's the day. I know it was President Theodore Roosevelt who inspired the cuddly stuffed animals and New York store owner Morris Michtom is credited with making the fist one. My mom collected teddy bears, and when she passed away, many of hers came to live with me. I also gave a lot of them to the San Francisco Fire Department. The Chief told me it is comforting to a child who was just in an accident or fire to be given a cute bear. There is a small one that my mom used to order in large quantities to give to special people in her life.

September random acts

How about some random acts of kindness this September morning?  I think kindness is an everyday thing, but it doesn't hurt to do some special unexpected things from time to time, like surprising the office with homemade cookies, or buy the latte for the stranger behind you at the coffee counter, or leaving an extra big tip for your server at lunch.  Any ideas for some random things you might do today?

Kindness takes away the sting

On the news last night I heard of a young girl who had been hit by a car while on her bike.  She was injured as a result and her backpack with schoolwork and her tablet were stolen.  Sad that things like this happen.  The good side of the story is the outpouring of kindness.  She was given a new tablet, backpack, and even money.  So many folks came forward out of concern for the girl.  The wonderful kindness takes away the sting of the mean act.  Another reason for more kindness!

Honoring labor

I'm not saying that grilling, camping, or even shopping those sales is a bad thing, but take a moment sometime today and recall the origins of this holiday. Labor Day came about back in the late 19th century because by trade unionists proposed a day to honor the contributions of the labor movement.  Kindly take a moment to think about that, and be thankful.

A month of courtesy

Did you know that September is National Courtesy Month? Courtesy and kindness go hand in hand, so I just know we have a great month! Of course as I always say, there is never a time when kindness is not appropriate, so show a lot of kindness and courtesy and brighten up the world!

Cherry popovers

Today is National Cherry Popover Day! It really is!  The thought of a nice hot cherry popover makes my mouth water.  Oh I know!  A great way to celebrate today would be to make a nice big batch of popovers and then share them at work and with friends.  What a kind thing to do.  I suppose you could throw in some lemon popovers too.

First thoughts

Already blogging about folks giving back to society, I was thinking two years ago of a simple thing we all can do to make a difference:  be kind to others.  I began this blog a few days later and was thinking then more of the various random acts of kindness that we often hear about.  I've mentioned those acts here before and quoted lots of people, but from my first thoughts about doing this blog came a great gift for me.  I try to be a better person.  I try to continually be more kind.  I intend to keep on trying too!

so many happy birthday wishes

Oh my!  Yesterday I received so many happy birthday wishes.  There were some cards in the mail and numerous social media posts.  The day began with a special birthday breakfast with my sister.  There was so much kindness shown.  I am truly grateful.

Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Get out those party hats!

Yes, today is my birthday.  I was thinking the other day about how kindness seems to always be magnified at special events like birthdays and anniversaries.  Oh how I love a good celebration, but don't just party for me, party for everyone!  I'm inspired to treat everyone like every single day is a birthday for them.  Get out those party hats folks!  Let's celebrate life!

Too much hate

There is too much hate in the world.  Yesterday a mass shooting in Florida injured several and took more lives.  Why?  Why do we let this keep happening?  In another place, a nine-year-old boy took his own life after being bullied  for being gay.  We need a world of kindness, love, and respect.  Say no to hate - ALL hate.  We CAN change things!

Remembering the kindness of John McCain

It is heartwarming to read the many kind messages about Senator John McCain who passed away yesterday.  His daughter said some wonderful things about the father who "taught me how to live." Meghan McCain also said now that her dad is gone, she's motivated more than ever to spend her lifetime living up to "his example, his expectations, and his love."  Words I see from so many to describe him are kind and honorable.  What a great way to be remembered!

The Special Ends

The special week of kindness ends today.  No, that doesn't mean we should stop being nice to each other.  We need to keep the kindness with us always!  How did you do this week though?  By thinking about it, do you think you became a little kinder?  Perhaps we should try this again from time to time.

Friday, August 24, 2018

closer to the end

As we get closer to the end of our self-proclaimed special week of kindness, how has it been?  Do you think this has helped you to be a bit kinder?  Any stories you want to share?  Let us finish this week with a bang!

Thursday, August 23, 2018

Five

Today is day five in our week of special kindness.  (How are you doing with that?  I hope this is encouraging some to be more kind)!  Oh and it is also just five days until my birthday.  Woo hoo!  That just made me think of another way to show kindness - treat folks they way you would on their birthday, but treat them that way every day!

Wednesday, August 22, 2018

Special Number Four

Trying to do some extra special things this week.  I hope you're joining me.  It's our fourth day and I have decided to spend some extra time on social media posting encouraging messages and reading ones from other folks.  I'll check out Instagram, facebook and twitter right now and then throughout the day, and hopefully my kind words will brighten someone's day!

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

The Third

This week we are trying to put some extra effort on being kind people.  Perhaps it already comes naturally for you.  Wonderful!  I still need to work on it myself.  I'm not perfect.  This is the third day of this special week and today I want to make sure that everyone I encounter, sees me smiling.  I'm not talking about a sick demented expression that looks like I am up to no good, but a pleasant, happy face.

Monday, August 20, 2018

2nd Day Special Week

Kindness is an always thing.  It's not just reserved for special occasions.  Therefore doing a "special week" might seem odd.  I goal though is always to make me a kinder person, and hopefully some of you as well.  So, each day this week, let's try a little harder.  I think I'll stop and get some flowers at the grocery store and then hand one to everyone I meet this morning.

Sunday, August 19, 2018

A Special Week of Kindness

It's summertime.  It's the beginning of another week in August.  How about we add something to the calendar?  Let's proclaim this a special week of kindness!  As you know, I wish we were always kind to everyone, and I try so hard to be kinder myself, but if we put the spotlight on our kindness during the next seven days, perhaps we will all try even harder.  It's certainly worth a try!

National Non Profit Day

The spotlight today is on volunteers, benefactors, and all those who are part of nonprofit organizations.  One of the kindest things a person can do is to give back to the community and make a difference, so be thinking about that on this National Nonprofit Day and perhaps it's time to get more involved.

Happy birthday Mrs Child

The wonderful chef, author, and tv personality Julia Child once said  "A party without cake, is just a meeting."  Today would have been her 106th birthday, so let's eat some cake!

99

Folks seem to live longer these days and if you can have a long life and a healthy one, how wonderful, right?  I have a neighbor who turns 99 today.  She is always smiling and seems to truly enjoy life.  I know she brings joy to those around her!  She isn't an internet user, but I'll say it here anyway:  Happy birthday Alfie!

August morning kindness

From time to time I have listed various random acts of kindness.  On this bright August morning, I have a few for you.  As you go about your day, pick up trash. Call or visit a homebound person. Pay a compliment at least once a day. Transport someone who can’t drive. Make telephone calls in support of equality urging others to put aside hate. Say something nice to everyone you meet today. Send a treat to a school or day-care center. Volunteer at an organization that needs help. Any ideas you want to share?

More than a slogan

"Be kind to one another" isn't just a slogan for Ellen DeGeneres.  How many checks has she given to needy people on her tv program, for example?  How often does she share stories about people who do good for others?  I've said it before and I will say it again, I love the wonderful example she sets for us!

it's a celebration

Can I celebrate this entire month?  August is my birthday month.  At the very least, I should be extra kind to everyone!

kindness to our friends

Today is International Friendship Day. Did you even know there was such a thing?  Reach out to others today.  Remember that friendship begins with kindness.

The Kindness of Michelle

Yesterday I experienced kindness from several people, but I want to tell you about Michelle.  I'm a hospital volunteer and that means doing various tasks, but in the middle of the day I was suddenly on the needing side instead of the giving side.  A wonderful hospital employee named Michelle (and whom I already knew) just happened to be walking down the hall behind me.  She saw that I was in distress, detoured from what she was doing to get me quickly to the Emergency Department, stayed with me while I was admitted, and said to let her know how I was doing.  Some might argue that she was simply doing her job.  Yes, all of us in the hospital should help someone in distress, but she went beyond that, doing much more than she had to.  She cared.  I might have written about her someday even if yesterday had not happened.  As I mentioned, I already knew Michelle, and kindness is something I had seen from her before.

Christmas in July

At a Christmas in July event yesterday I saw so many examples of kindness, it brought me great joy!  People were buying gifts like crazy, and sometimes they were getting gifts for folks they hardly knew.  I hard one woman say, "I can't wait to see the look on his face!"  Later on I heard another person remark "I love making people happy."  Let me tell you, they sure made me happy.

Those wonderful memories

Yesterday I spoke of Miss Sally, a wonderful memory from my past.  Do you have someone like Miss Sally in your memories?  Hopefully we all have a lot of kind people in our lives, but is there a particular memory that really stands out?  Tell us about it!

Sweets for the sweet

Lollipops have been satisfying the sweet tooth for a very long time.  My great aunt used to make them in molds - many different shapes and flavors.  You can buy whole bags of them in stores for just a few bucks.  Why do I mention this?  Today is National Lollipop Day and what a kind thing it would be to purchase a few bags and hand them out to family, friends, perhaps even co-workers.  Not only is this a kind thing, but it's pretty sweet too!

feedback

The counter says a lot of folks visit this blog.  Of course we don't know if you actually read the words here.  Perhaps a bit of feedback would help.  Leave a comment below.  Say a kind word or two.  Encourage us with a story of kindness.  We'd really love to hear from you!

Give me a scoop

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. You know the saying, right?  Well did you know that today is National Ice Cream Day?  Some of the country’s best ice cream joints are actually giving away some of those delicious icy desserts.  What could be more kind?  Maybe this would be a great day to also treat some of your friends.

Thirteen can be lucky

People are often afraid of the number thirteen, especially Friday the 13th.  Well today is a 13 and a Friday.  It doesn't have to be unlucky though.  Be kind to yourself.  Don't add unnecessary worry.  Be kind to others too.  I think we can make this a very lucky day - certainly a very kind one!

Simplify

Today as you go about your business, do or stop doing things to simplify your day. Why? Well it is always good to make things more simple, but today is National Simplicity Day.

July morning kindness

Every now and then I share some random acts of kindness here, and on this wonderful July morning, I thought I would offer these: Volunteer to read to kids at your local library,  pay for the person behind you in the movie line, say nice things randomly to facebook and twitter friends, donate time at a senior center, bring flowers to work and share them with coworkers, and simply smile!

The Red Power Ranger

Sometimes celebrities inspire us in ways we might not expect.  I suppose you don't even have to be a celebrity for that to be true.  We ALL can inspire.  The actor who is the red Power Ranger always inspires me.  He seems like such a nice and kind person.  Shouldn't we all want to be thought of that way?

Could you think of any?

Yesterday I asked for you to list some simple ways to show kindness.  Did you think of any?  How about just lending a hand to someone who needs it or giving someone a great big hug?   A simple smile is a kind act.  Pay someone a compliment, pick up litter, write a kind note, hold a door for someone, donate something to a worthy cause, and so many other things.  Any ideas you have are always welcome!

Your simple random acts

Remember all the times I listed various random acts of kindness?  Did you ever do any of them?  What inspires you to do those simple kind acts?  Help us all out and list some ways in the comments below.

All those donations

I see kindness expressed through donations all the time.  During the year I raise funds for various causes, and it warms my heart when folks contribute.  Recently someone I don't even know gave a large monetary gift.  I see lots of donations come in at the hospital where I volunteer too.  People give money and there are also a lot of donations of used books and magazines, and of course donations of time.

Enjoy every day!

How was your holiday?  Were you able to do something fun yesterday?  Let's carry the spirit with us going forward.  There's no reason why every day should not be enjoyable!  We can make other folks happy too!

Fabulous Fourth

It was 242 years ago that the United States declared our independence.  Today, celebrate.  Be proud of our country, but work to make it better, and kinder.

July 2018

Today begins July 2018 - no big surprise.  I'm sure you have a calendar.  I'm sure you also know I'm going to suggest another month of kindness.  Why not?  Let's all pitch in every single day and make this a kinder world!

More than I can say

I just got back from a short trip and I saw so many acts of kindness, it truly warmed my heart.  I already told you about one of them, and there were actually so many, it is all probably more than I can say without forgetting some.  It encourages me though and I hope you will be encouraged too.  Being kind to each other enriches our world.

Red hot kindness

During the summer months where I live, it can get pretty hot.  We have reached the triple digits every day lately.  Heat can do many things to people, but don't be overcome by it.  Remember the sunscreen and the water.  A kind thing to do would be to have extra to share with someone who might forget.  (Drugstores often have trial size sunscreen and water comes in all sizes these days).  Many cities have cooling centers on those very hot days.  Don't let yourself get overheated, and if you encounter someone who has, seek assistance for them.

Thursday, June 28, 2018

The End

Well today I will end the lists, at least for awhile.  I hope it has been as helpful to you as it has to me.  One thing I always picture on any list of random kindness acts is smiling.  It is such an easy thing to do and it brightens everyone's day.  Oh and a simple greeting.  Trying saying good morning or good afternoon to all the folks you encounter today - yes, even the strangers.  You'll be surprised at how many respond back.

Wednesday, June 27, 2018

Yup, more

Pay for the meal of the person behind you in the drive-through. Bring flowers to work and share them with coworkers. What can YOU add?

beginning our list

Let's get started with that list of kind things I mentioned.  Buy some bottles of water and randomly hand them out to strangers on the street. Drop off a plant or a plate of cookies to your nearby police or fire station. Clean graffiti from neighborhood walls and buildings. Buy a stranger a free pizza. Oh my!  What kind acts can YOU think of?

Watch for something different in June

Usually I write something here about kindness in general terms, but watch for something different in June.  I've not this before, especially back when we first began, but for a few days I am going to do it again.  Lists.  I'll write here some specific acts that we can easily do to show kindness.  I invite you to join me, not only in doing these things, but in adding to the lists.

friendly skies

I less than 24 hours, I will be in the air, heading away for a few days.  One thing I am always amazed by is the kindness of those who work in air travel.  From the baggage handlers to the gate agents to the flight attendants to all the many folks who deal with the public at airports and in the air, it is amazing to me how they can always be so nice, especially when they encounter cranky passengers.

Dad

I was fortunate to have a good dad.  He died way too young though.  On this Fathers Day I think of him as we honor all dads.  Fatherhood is a beautiful thing.

Besties

Today is National Best Friends Day.  I think that is wonderful.  Whether you have one bestie, or BFF (best friend forever) or numerous such friends, it is definitely something to cherish.  Think of all the kind things you do for each other, and be joyful!

Thursday, June 7, 2018

what did you see?

Yesterday I suggested that in addition to being kind, we also take a moment to observe the kind acts around us.  "Observe the little things.  Watch how folks can bring a smile to others," I said.  Well, what did you see?  Sometimes we take things for granted, but if just concentrate a little on doing and on seeing, I think we will all become kinder.  It will be second nature.

Ice Cream Sunday

Wouldn't you like and ice cream sundae today?  Would that make this and ice cream Sunday?  Oh my!  What a kind thing to do - sharing the joy of ice cream with others/  What's your favorite flavor?  I'm a huge fan of Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey!

Be Kind In June

Be kind in June, just as all other times.  Be kind to your family and to your friends.  Be kind of course to yourself as well.  Let kindness be your daily way.

it's the day for it!

Smiling is always a good thing, but today there is even more reason.  Today is National Smile Day.  Seriously.  I don't make these things up.  So smile a little more - it's the day for it!

Hate cannot drive out hate

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Most people are familiar with those words from the Rev Martin Luther King, Jr.  With all of the hate in the news yesterday it seemed appropriate to think about Dr King's words.  "Hate cannot drive out hate."  May we learn and never forget.

holding them in a special place

No school and no work today for many people.  Trips to the beach or sales in favorite stores or maybe a baseball game will occupy a lot of folks, but what is today really about?  Today is Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor the men and women of the US military who lost their lives in the line of duty.  We don't know them all of course, but on this day we are holding them in a special place because they did something special for us all.

She brought doughnuts

Yesterday I was at a training for hospital volunteers.  (I've already been volunteering, but going to an occasional meeting helps me to stay fresh, and also meet any new folks).  The person making the presentation is also a volunteer and she does such an amazing job.  She even brought doughnuts!  The kindness was so visible in every direction.

Moral support

No, I didn't remember that great thought I had, but last night I received  a message from a future leader.  He was sad that he couldn't make a monetary donation to a fundraiser I am participating in, and said "At the very least, you know you have my moral support!"  Least?  Oh my!  Moral support is so important!  This is one of the kindest, nicest people I know, and he is always involved in programs that make life better.  Here he was worried he wasn't giving what he wanted, when in reality, he was giving a truly great gift for which I will be forever grateful.

Onward

It was fun yesterday marking another anniversary of this blog.  600?  Oh my!  I really had no idea I would get up that many mornings and write something about kindness.  Now though I move onward.  I want to become a better, kinder person, and I'd love to see a kinder world.  Join me.  Your comments here are always welcome.

SIX HUNDRED

Wow!  I cannot believe it!  This morning is the 600th morning that I have sat down and written something here about kindness.  Thanks to those of you who read this regularly and those who share it.  I know I have made myself a kinder person.  If any of you have been touched by these messages, let us know in the comments below.  Now, onward to 600 more blog entries and hopefully to a kinder world!

Testify to love

Much of the world was watching early this morning as a member of the British Royal Family wed an American in a traditional ceremony attended by some 600 guests and viewers around the world.  Bishop Michael Curry preached about love.  Well preach isn't a strong enough word.  It was electric!  Love and kindness go hand-in-hand, so you know this was an event that captured me.  How wonderful if this testimony to love encouraged more loving actions by everyone who was watching and all who hear of this!

chocolate chips

Today is National Chocolate Chip Day!  Seriously.  There really is such a thing.  I was just thinking about how kind it would be to share some chocolate chip cookies.  Agree?  I can spend some time in the kitchen or if time and money are an issue, just pop into the grocery store and pick up some packages of chocolate chip cookies.  Then bring your cookies and some napkins and hand them out on the street, take them to work, share them with a neighbor, or spread the treats any way you dream up.  Yummy and kind!

Going up

While I have no official statistics, it seems kindness goes up every year on Mothers Day.  Everyone wants to be especially kind to their mom.  Cards, breakfast in bed, presents, a fancy brunch - we do so many different thing to show Mom we love her.  I'm always happy to see kindness go up, but how incredible if we showed the same manner of kindness every single day!

What say you

Three days of quoting the same person got me thinking.  What do I say that folks might want to repeat?  Better yet, what to YOU say?  Do you ever speak of kindness and good deeds?  Do encouraging things come from your mouth?  Share some of them!

Monday, May 7, 2018

at the store

The other day while I was at the store, the lady in front of me was having trouble paying.  She presented a VISA card, but the store doesn't accept VISA.  She was traveling from Canada and it seems the only cash she had was Canadian.  She kept apologizing but really had done nothing wrong.  I asked how much it all cost and it was only fourteen dollars and some change, so I handed the cashier a twenty dollar bill.  You would think I had just given her a new car!  Both the lady and the cashier kept thanking me.  The lady then offered to give me the equivalent in Canadian currency.  Nope.  That's fine.  Glad I could help.  And that was that.  I just know this lady will be helping someone else one day!

May the Fourth

I wonder how many people when they hear "May the Fourth be with you," respond "And also with you."  I wonder.

Thursday, May 3, 2018

What's today all about?

What's today all about?  What do we celebrate on May 3rd?  Why kindness of course!  Kindness should be celebrated every day.  Who wouldn't want more kindness in the world?

May Day

There was once a big deal made of the first day of May.  In small towns especially, small baskets filled with homemade bread or cookies, cut flowers, or other goodies, would be left at someone's doorstep. You would set down the basket, ring the doorbell, and run away.  Of course there are other May Day traditions in the various places where it is celebrated, but this one seems to be such a lovely act of kindness.  I think it would be a nice random thing to do any day!

That's a wrap

Okay folks, that's a wrap - on April that is.  Of course just because the month ends today, doesn't mean our kindness ends.  We plan to be more kind each day.  I love the feeling when someone smiles and nods at me or when they say thanks.  Being a kind person isn't just for the folks you are kind to - it makes you feel good too!

Sunday, April 29, 2018

those April showers

Has it been raining where you live? Somehow I just thought of Judy Garland singing "it isn't raining rain you know, i t's raining violets."  Anyway, they say that April showers bring May flowers.  Think about all we have to look forward to in the days ahead!

The best tonic

I am hoping to be sleeping in my own bed tonight.  Hospital beds are just not that comfortable.  I have never seen so much kindness though.  Yes, some of it is certainly part of the job description, but I have seen a number of nurses, technicians, and others rise above doing just what they have to, to doing what comes from their hearts.  As I said yesterday, that is the best tonic indeed!

Wednesday, April 25, 2018

Tardy

Tardiness can sometimes be excused.  Today I am writing words here a little later than usual because I am once again in hospital.  Please be kind and forgive me for being so late.  Since this isn't a personal blog, I won't go into why I am here, but let me say I have seen many acts of kindness!  Can there be any better medicine?

How would you like to be remembered?

Yesterday I watched the funeral for former First Lady Barbara Bush.  So many kind words were spoken.  It has been that way since she passed last week.  How would you like to be remembered?  Wouldn't it be wonderful if, like Mrs Bush, you were remembered for being nice to others - for being a kind and giving person?  What a marvelous legacy!

Friday, April 20, 2018

Nana

April 20th was my grandmother's birthday.  I'm not good with dates generally, but I could always remember hers.  She was a very kind woman and I miss her.  How wonderful when one of the greatest memories is of a person's kindness!

Feedback

On this wonderful spring day, consider giving us some feedback here.  Do you read this often?  Have you ever shared this with anyone else?  Do you consider yourself a kind person?  We'd love your feedback!

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

Thanks Mrs Bush

Thinking this morning of former First Lady Barbara Bush who passed away yesterday.  I kind and caring woman, I will always remember her words:  "Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people - your family, friends, and coworkers, and even strangers you meet along the way."  Thanks Mrs Bush.

The flowers that bloom in the spring

While I know some of our North American friends still have snow and ice, many more are seeing those first signs that the season is changing and the flowers that bloom in the spring are always such a pretty and encouraging symbol.  One of the kindest things a person can do is to give flowers to someone else.  If you have your own garden, that can be a lovely place to find some beautiful stems, and it is usually fairly each to pick up a nice bunch at the supermarket.

Big Word

Want to know a big word?  Friggatriskaidekaphobia.  It means fear of Friday the 13th.  Did you already know that?  You probably do know that triskaidekaphobia means the fear of the number thirteen.  Anyway, have no fear.  Just be kind and caring today like any other day.

Thursday, April 12, 2018

In the workplace

Yesterday I was at an anti-harassment training and I was thinking about kindness in the workplace.  The inappropriate behavior we were warned against seems simple enough to avoid and yet so many have to endure this on a daily basis.  Just like at home and with our friends, kindness it seems is the solution.  Be kind always with no bullying or harassment.  That should be so easy.

Wednesday, April 11, 2018

Pets

Yesterday I said we should be kind to our siblings, and today it's the critters.  National Pet Day is observed on the eleventh day of April each year, and while I think we should always be kind to animals, it would certainly be great if we paid extra attention today!

Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Siblings

If you grew up with siblings, then you know that there's no one else in the world who knows you better than your sister or brother.  Yes, they can be a pain in the butt, but you love them still, and so on this National Siblings Day, be especially kind to your sisters and brothers.

April fondness

I have always been fond of April.  Growing up in New York, April was when we would usually begin to see flowers, certainly a cheerful time.  People seemed to be more cheerful too, with the winter blues disappearing.  Of course a little bit of kindness can cheer up any time of year, so we can not only make this month special, but every single month.

Who reads this stuff?

Sometimes I wonder who reads this stuff?  Some of you may wonder who writes this stuff?  Well the second question is easy.  From the beginning, I write what you see here each morning, although on a number of occasions I have quoted someone else.  As to who reads it, well I actually have no idea.  That's why from time to time I encourage you to leave a comment.

Arnel's Foundation

Journey's fantastic lead singer Arnel Pineda did something even more fantastic than his singing, he founded the Arnel Pineda Foundation, Inc! It's a charity organization based in the Philippines and from what I read it is doing amazing things for the kids there. Now I don't know Mr Pineda at all and my only information is what I read, but he seems to have performed an incredible act of kindness and generosity. The world could use more folks like that.

no fooling

Today is All Foos Day.  It is also Easter Day.  The former usually bring pranks.  The latter usually brings joy and celebration (and a lot of chocolate).  Of course both are additional excuses for being kind to others.  Really!  No fooling!

The Visits

Not that long ago, I had a friend from back home come to visit me and I had such a great time.  I can remember too being hospitalized and getting visitors.  In both cases, it meant the world to be that kindness brought folks to see me and bring with them great joy.  Even dropping by a nursing home and visiting strangers can brighten up someone's day!

Keep those cards and letters coming

Keep those cards and letters coming in.  It was a long time ago when Loretta Lynn sang those words in a song and Dean Martin said them at the end of his television show.  It has been said by many folks over the years.  I was thinking of them though because I really want to invite you all to respond.  You don't have to write a letter or even a card.  Below there is a comments section and a word or two there would be most kind.  Let me know what you think about this blog.  Tell me a story of kindness that you witnessed or were a part of.  Make suggestions.  It really would be of great help.

short message

Be Kind!

(that's today's message - yes, it's short, but it doesn't always have to be long and detailed, right?)

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Often we need patience

Often we need patience in order to find true happiness, because it doesn't always come fast and it sometimes it doesn't even come easy, but it is always worth it!  Be kind to yourself and tolerate those delays.

things left undone

Mother Mary Angelica once said "There are many who are not guilty of doing anything wrong but very guilty of sins of omission - the things they neglect to do - the good things - the kind, thoughtful words, compassionate thoughts and hopeful attitudes they might have had towards their neighbor."

Sunday, March 25, 2018

Five years later

March 25, 2013 will always stand out in my mind.  One of the nicest, kindest, most loving people I have ever known - my mom, died that day.  I'll also remember the great kindness shown by the hospital staff.  There was a certain nurse's aide who had met Mom the day before, but who this day was working on a different ward.  During her lunch break she came to visit Mom and she gave her a sponge bath, changed her clothing and bedding, and rubbed lotion on her.  This dear lady was back on her own ward when Mom passed away a few hours later, but because of her, Mom left this life in a nice clean state.

like butter on toast

As I was putting butter on my toast this morning, I thought about how I was spreading it from one side to the other.  How wonderful it would be if we did the same thing with kindness.  Let's spread it all over, like butter on our toast!

For beautiful lips

The wonderful humanitarian and actress Audrey Hepburn once said "For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone."

Kind visit

I just received a kind surprise.  A dear friend whom I seldom see, is coming to my town for a few days!  How very nice of her.  We have lots of catching up and I just know we are going to have a great time!

Day of Happiness

Every March 20th since 2013, the International Day of Happiness (established by the United Nations) is observed.  How wonderful, huh?  Everyone deserves to be happy in life and that a day is set aside to focus on this gives us all hope.  Let us continue to show kindness and be nice to each other and work for a happier world!

Building up others

Putting someone else down doesn't make you look better. Building up others will do that. When you build up someone else, you build up yourself at the same time. Oh and it actually feels good to say positive things about other people!

Comments or suggestions

Talking kindness every day I think is much harder than being a kind person.  How many ways are there to say it?  I'd hate to repeat myself, but I think kindness is so very important.  So, what do YOU think?  I would so love to hear your comments and suggestions!

From the mouth of Saint Patrick

"Before I was humiliated I was like a stone that lies in deep mud, and he who is mighty came and in his compassion raised me up and exalted me very high and placed me on the top of the wall."  -Saint Patrick

Joy to the world

Joy to the world!  Sound like Christmas huh?  Nope.  It's not Easter yet either.  No reason we shouldn't be spreading joy though.  Joy begins with each one of us.

Doughnut shop

This really cute Easter doughnut was being purchased by a police officer - he was really looking forward to it because he commented on the decorations with the eggs and the chocolate.  A little boy waiting with his mom said he wanted ne of those too.  Unfortunately there weren't any more.  No problem.  The cop asked the clerk to give the doughnut to the little boy instead of himself - he even paid for it.  After that, it was hard to tell who had the biggest smile, the little boy or the police officer.

Godspeed Stephen Hawking

"However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. Where there's life, there's hope."  -Stephen Hawking (8 January 1942 - 14 March 2018)

Rich or Poor

If someone were to pay you five cents for every kind word you said about other people and collect a penny for every unkind word, would you be rich or poor? Think about it!

I'll get him a card

The UPS man mentioned when making a delivery, that he would be retiring in April.  Immediately one of the women in the office made a notation on her calendar, and when he was out of hearing range she said, "I'm glad he told us.  I'll get him a card."  What a lovely example of kindness.

Not a lecture

Yesterday I mentioned my thoughts when I began this blog a couple of years ago and would I have enough to say.  One thing I am certain of - It has never been my intent for this to be a lecture.  When I share quotes by others and stories of kindness it is not to say this is how YOU should behave.  What I really want to say is this is how I think we ALL should behave.  I hope that by writing these words each morning, I will be inspired to be a better, kinder person.

How much is there?

I remember back in 2016 when I began writing this daily blog.  "Kindness huh?  Is that really what I want to write about?  Will I have something to say for long?  How much is there?"  Well I need not have worried.  The world always needs more kindness and so I will continue urging and hopefully making myself a bit kinder in the process.

Just a natural

Being nice to other people - is that kindness?  Is it love?  Is it a special way of living?  For me, being nice is just a natural.  It just happens, because we care.

Thursday, March 8, 2018

What's it all mean?

Not sure what I mean when I speak of kindness?  Let me use some other words:  affection, helpfulness, benevolence, consideration, altruism, warmheartedness, friendliness, thoughtfulness, generosity, big-heartedness,   compassion, neighborliness, charitableness, warmth, unselfishness, gentleness, concern, understanding, selflessness, benignity, hospitality - you get the idea.

joy

Saint Teresa of Calcutta said "Joy is prayer; joy is strength: joy is love; joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls."

Words from Saint Teresa of Calcutta

During her lifetime, Mother Teresa (now Saint Teresa of Calcutta) said many inspirational things.  One of my favorites "I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love."

of chocolate bunnies

The drugstore looks like Easter is tomorrow, when actually it isn't until April 1st.  I glanced at all the candy and now I am thinking of chocolate bunnies and those wonderful filled eggs.  Oh my!  Oh course a kind thing at this time of year is to buy a bag or two of those candies and leave them in the breakroom at work or surprise your friends and family with some treats!

Another command

I always tell folks that my mom would say March 4th is a command (march forth).  It's been nearly five years since Mom passed away, but I'm certain I will always remember this.   Cherish your memories everybody, and may we all march forth on March fourth and do kind things for one another!

Timing

The wonderful science fiction writer Octavia Butler, wrote some nonfiction too. She once spoke so eloquently of timing saying "Sometimes being a friend means mastering the art of timing. There is a time for silence. A time to let go and allow people to hurl themselves into their own destiny. And a time to prepare to pick up the pieces when it's all over."

The most vulnerable

We should be kind to everyone - I say that all the time, but it is especially important that we show kindness to the most vulnerable, the very young and the very old.  Look out for the kids and the elderly in your life.

Marching orders

So what kind of instructions do we have for the month of March?  Being kind to everyone of course!  With spring just around the corner (despite the huge amounts of snow on this first day of the month, kindness should be even easier!

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

Done already?

Are we done already (with February, that is)?  Yup! Today is the 59th day of the year with 306 days remaining until 2018 comes to a close.  If you don't think you showed enough kindness this month, fear not.  March is longer and there is plenty of opportunity ahead!

Tuesday, February 27, 2018

mean what you say

Be sure to say what you mean and mean what you say.  Let people know how you feel, being always open, honest and real.

Monday, February 26, 2018

Always adding

I can add to that list of kind acts every day. After all, there are so many ideas!  So here are some more, as we begin another month: Give flowers to be delivered with meal delivery programs. Open the door for another person - yes, something that simple makes a difference. If you are able to, leave an extra-large tip for the waitperson. Sing at a nursing home. Give your full attention to someone in need and simply listen. Tell a bus or taxi driver how much you appreciate their driving.  There are so many more ideas!

Inspiration from the Olympics

Tonight with the closing ceremonies over in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the XXIII Olympic Winter Games come to a close.  So many positive things came out of these games.  (Yes there were negative moments too, but I prefer to focus on the positive).  A lot of kind moments.  A lot of heroic moments.  A lot of unforgettable moments.

Saturday, February 24, 2018

Another beginning

Each day can be a new beginning for showing kindness.  Each week and each month we can start fresh too and strive to be kinder, nicer people.  If we stumble and are not as kind as we like, we must never give up, for there will still be a chance to make a new beginning.

February 23rd

Do you know what February 23rd is?  It's TODAY silly!  Make it a good one, and a kind one.  Make it a day you will be proud of.

Thursday, February 22, 2018

Why the smile

The smile on your face is there because of what?  Do you always wake up happy?  Did someone say something to you yesterday that stayed with you?  Do you always smile, or is this now because of some kindness you remember?

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

Leave a trail

Nobody being kind to you?  Yes, the world can be mean, but you certainly don't have to be.  As someone very wise once said “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”  You can be a leader in kindness!

Tuesday, February 20, 2018

Oh joy!

Perhaps I sound like a little kid on Christmas morning, but there is something magical about seeing another person experiencing joy.  When you know that you helped to bring it about, well that seems to make it even more special.  I love trying to make people happy.  It's probably my favorite thing to do!

Random acts of kindness

Can you think of some random ways to show kindness to others? How about these: As you go about your day, pick up trash. Call or visit a homebound person. Make a point of finding the name of a supermarket or drugstore employee and then praise him/her through that company’s corporate office. When drivers try to merge into your lane, let them in with a wave and a smile. Tell your boss that you think he/she does a good job. Pay a compliment at least once a day. Donate blood. Transport someone who can’t drive. Others?

wise words from Steven Seagal

The wonderful actor and producer Steven Seagal once said "My philosophy is that the most important aspect of any religion should be human kindness. And to try to ease the suffering of others. To try to bring light and love into the lives of mankind." I certainly agree with that!

Our holiday

It's Random Acts of Kindness Week, and the 17th of February (today) is even more special because it is Random Acts of Kindness Day. The whole idea is to encourage people for acts of goodness and kindness toward others. Of course we promote kindness every day, but don't be surprised if more folks are being especially kind today!.

New Year Wishes

Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year, which is celebrated by people all around the world.  May this New Year be with kindness and prosperity and may it be as melodious for you as your favorite song.

straight in the eye

Never bend your head.  Always hold it up high.  With confidence, look the world straight in the eye, and do it with kindness and with love.

Hearts and flowers

Oh the joy of Valentine's Day.  So much love, or is there?  So many send roses or head out to a romantic dinner, because they feel they HAVE to.  Show the kindness and the love every single day, not just on special occasions, and let's all do it because we WANT to!

Tuesday, February 13, 2018

Memento, homo, quia pulvis es, et in pulverem reverteris

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day, but it also happens this year to be Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent when many Christians have their foreheads marked with ashes while "Memento, homo, quia pulvis es, et in pulverem reverteris," is said.  (Actually it's usually said in the local vernacular "Remember, man, that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return" is the English).  I bring this up because a very unkind thing often happens - folks are teased for the mark on their forehead.  Not nice.  Whether you follow this religious practice or not, the kind thing to do is respect those that do follow this.

Monday, February 12, 2018

Perfect moment

Have you ever heard someone say they are waiting for the "perfect moment?" Oh my! I hear it all the time. What a waste too. Don't wait for the "perfect moment." Take the moment and make it perfect.

Someone did

Yesterday I asked for comments here and although I wasn't expecting hundreds of responses, I did find it very nice that someone did indeed post.  It was a brief "Hi Michael!" but it really meant a lot.  That's what kindness is all about.  Random Acts of Kindness Week begins today (through the 17th) by the way, so let's be extra kind!

Saturday, February 10, 2018

Your turn

As I said yesterday, I have written 500 posts here about kindness, so now it's your turn.  It's on all of us to be kind, but could I ask for some of you to write about it too?  Simply write in the comments section below for everyone to see.

Five Hundred

For five hundred mornings in a row, I have gotten up and written a few lines here about kindness.  Has it made the world kinder or made a difference to anyone?  We can only hope.  I do know it continues to help me be better in how I relate to others.

It takes a village

It's often said that it takes a village to raise a child.  I agree, but I think it takes a village to do anything well.  We aren't meant to exist in isolation.  One of the kindest things a person can do is to care about neighbors, to care about family, to even care about folks we have never even known.  Let's be part of our villages and let our villages grow and flourish.

Wednesday, February 7, 2018

Get involved

The world won't be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing a thing about it.  Be kind.  Get involved.  Care.

Tuesday, February 6, 2018

sharing the candy

Valentine's Day is next week, but how many of you already have candy?  Do you have a favorite?  One very kind act is sharing that candy with others.  You don't have to buy the most expensive box of See's - even a few of those conversation hearts can brighten someone's day!

Monday, February 5, 2018

Did your team win?

The Winter Olympics is just ahead and the Super Bowl just happened.  The results are not always the way we like, but good sportsmanship means we accept the results and move forward.  There is no burning down the town.  That is not only unkind, it's stupid!

Sunday, February 4, 2018

lookiing back on last week

As we begin this new week, take a moment and look back on last week.  Think of an act of kindness that you witnessed or some kind thing that you did.  How did it make you feel.  Were you the sort of person you want to be last week?  How will you make the week ahead better?  Give it some thought.

Saturday, February 3, 2018

Third

It's the third day of February (by the way, how do you pronounce this month?) and the third chance this month to show kindness.  Since we have a three here, let's try to show kindness at least three times today!

Friday, February 2, 2018

over and over and over

In the classic film Groundhog Day, weatherman Phil Connors is forced to live the same day over and over and over.   Of course if it's a day filled with love and kindness, who wouldn't want it to end?  In the movie, Phil begins to re-examine his life and priorities.  May we always continue to do likewise and become better persons for it.

Thursday, February 1, 2018

this month

It's still cold outside where I live and so many kind gestures can relate to the temperature.  (Bring a nice hot coffee or tea to a coworker).  This is also the love month with Valentines Day just two weeks away.  There is so much more though in February.  It's the shortest month of the year, but don't let that slow us down!  There is still plenty of opportunity to be kind!

Kind thoughts and actions

I'm not an expert, but it seems to me that if we think kind thoughts, we are more likely to do kind actions.  Agree?  Okay then, let's do both!

Monday, January 29, 2018

In Sixteen Days

It's January 29th - 16 days from Valentine's Day, the day of love.  Don't you think every day should be a day of love?  In sixteen days, let's all be proud of the fact that we have just had sixteen days of kindness!

Sunday, January 28, 2018

gorilla present

I have often noted the kindness of Ellen DeGeneres, but did you know her wife is kind as well?  This year for Ellen's birthday, wife Portia de Rossi gave Ellen a permanent gorilla home in Rwanda, and setup the "Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund."  The happiness on Ellen's face said it all!

More kind things to do

Take an acquaintance to dinner.  Sponsor people in fundraising walk-a-thons.  Buy cold drinks for the people next to you at a ball game.  Spend some time serving food at a meal program for the needy.  Remember the bereaved with phone calls, cards, plants, and food.  Leave a treat or handmade note of thanks for a delivery person or mail carrier.  Share some ideas here.  There's never an end to kindness.

Saint Paul on kindness

In his letter to the Colossians, Blessed Paul the Apostle said "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience."  In his first letter to the Thessalonians, he said "See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone."  So much of Saint Paul's ministry is related to kindness.  Perhaps my favorite of all the things he said comes from his first letter to the Corinthians:  "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

Severe pain

Oh my!  Last night I had such severe pain that I went to the Emergency Department.  Kidney stones.  Painful.  I only mention this because of the tremendous kindness I was exposed to.  It seems that hospital employees are among the kindest people in the world - it least that's how it felt last night.  I am most grateful.

Tired of winter

How many of you are tired of winter?  (Can I see a show of hands)?  Be kind to yourself, and others.  Don't worry about the cold and the snow.  Spring will be here soon.  Enjoy each day for what it brings.  Remember, there will be days this summer when many folks (like me) will be thinking it is too hot!

Sunday, January 21, 2018

So many hugs

Last night I was at a birthday party for a 102-year-old woman.  The room was overflowing with kindness.  Hugs too.  Everyone was hugging.  I hope there is more of that today because this is National Hug Day.  Really.  It is!

Great memories from seniors

I often wish I'd spend more time with Grandpa. Nana and I did things together, and she lived much longer and was quite active.  Senior citizens are often alone, but have so much to share. Nana got out and kept busy, but that's not true of many as they get older.  A day in a retirement community can be very rewarding, and can brighten the day for them.  I like chatting with elders and asking them to share memories - how has the world changed during your life? can you remember your first date? Sharing memories helps both us and them stay connected.

Just one kind deed

One kind deed can change someone's day.  Just one kind deed.  Pretty amazing, huh?  One kind deed can even change lives!

Thursday, January 18, 2018

The whole wide world

Oh how I wish I could simply wrap my arms around the whole wide world for a giant hug and bring kindness and love to all.  Every day I want to try a little more until I am truly making a difference and actually bringing real joy to folks.

From the mouth of Betty White

The wonderful Betty White, who turns 96 today, once said "When I pontificate, it sounds so, you know, oh, well, she's preaching. I'm not preaching, but I think maybe I learned it from my animal friends. Kindness and consideration of somebody besides yourself. I think that keeps you feeling young. I really do."

More King

It is always amazing to me how many folks post photos and quotes of Martin Luther King Jr. on one day a year, but somehow never speak about Black Lives Matter and are critical of Colin Kaepernick and his peaceful protests.  I truly hope that someday we will always move forward, or to again quote Dr King, "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."  Another appropriate quote from the good reverend might be "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

Monday, January 15, 2018

Dr King

On the day set aside to remember the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior I was thinking of a lot of his inspiring speeches.  These words of his also came to mind:  "You meet people who forget you.  You forget people you meet.  But sometimes you meet those people you can't forget.  Those are your friends."  Dr King also said "I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."

Special outreach

A week ago I was feeling a bit under the weather, and when I mentioned it, many people offered kind words.  I know that there are churches and various other organizations that reach out to homebound folks or people with different illnesses, but I was thinking this would be a marvelous special outreach for all of us.  Feeling sick is never fun, but when people help out, it becomes so much easier to deal with.  Prayers are nice and cards or emails.  Visits or calls should be brief so as to not be taxing for the sick person - the idea is to cheer them up, not wear them out.  Also sometimes a nice care package (things like fruit juice or a hot soup or a casserole) can be so very helpful!

Saturday, January 13, 2018

Seeing a difference

I'm seeing a difference from the way I felt at the beginning of this week.  I'm also seeing a difference in the way kindness makes you feel.  I have to say every message and every phone call made me feel a little bit better.  Just knowing someone cares can make all the difference in the world!

Friday, January 12, 2018

always stand up for what's right

I know it can be difficult, but we must always stand up for what is right, even if it means we are standing all alone.

From the fortune cookie

While I am still sick, I can't keep talking about it!  I'll talk about something familiar.  Believe it or not, I have mentioned fortune cookies here a few times.   Fortune cookies!  Who would think?  Anyway, it is the fortune that appears on this page that I think of every day:  "From now on your kindness will lead you to success."  I wish I could just be more kind!

Tuesday, January 9, 2018

unkind

To me, unkind is such a foreign concept.  We might not all be as sweet and nice as the next person, but unkind to me says mean and rotten.  How could anyone act that way?  Yet sadly, there are some who do.  Oh how wonderful it would be if there were never an unkind action again!

Monday, January 8, 2018

Arnel

I'm sure you have all heard of the fantastic singer Arnel Pineda.  I've mentioned him before in both of my blogs.  His talent as a singer and songwriter is obvious, but in addition to that, it is his kindness that inspires me the most.  If all the world was like Arnel, what a better world this would be!

Are you enjoying yourself?

Yes, 2018 is still pretty new, but are you enjoying yourself so far?  How would you like to share that enjoyment?  What can you do to make things happy and enjoyable for someone else?  Sometimes it is something as simple as just being there for them.

Inspiration from Michelangelo

"Danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark." - Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni

Friday, January 5, 2018

How are we doing with those resolutions?

Did you make any New Year's resolutions?  You already know what I think.  It's not always a good thing - you can be setting yourself up for disappointment.  Resolving to be kinder though, that is something I can certainly get behind!

Tuesday, January 2, 2018

Cold? Shivering?

Cold? Shivering?  Winter can really be a drag, especially when the temperature gets really low.  Buy a friend a nice hot coffee or a hot chocolate.  Donate coats or blankets to shelters.  Make sure animals are out of the elements and have enough clean water.  Remember, if you are feeling the cold, so is everyone else!

Welcome 2018

As we ring in the brand new year, there is great cause for celebrating.  Here comes twelve new months for us to share kindness with others.  Let the love flow!
