Tick Tock

The clock is ticking.  Tick tock.  Another year is just about over.  Was there something you had planned to do but haven't gotten to?  Can you still get to it before we turn the calendar page?  I hope it was a kind year for you.  Let's make next year even better!

makes my heart sing

Occasionally I hear or see such wonderful things, that it makes my heart sing!  Keep on spreading that kindness!

Love this time of year

Oh how I love this time of year!  The holiday season always seems to bring out the best in people, huh?  Perhaps one of our resolutions can be to show our best (especially our kindness) all year long!

notes of thanks

There was a time when folks would automatically write thank you notes when they received gifts.  Oh how lovely it would be for that custom to return.  Did you receive any holiday cards or presents?  The kind thing is to acknowledge them right away and to say thank you.  I know I am grateful.

Lights and decorations

I love the lights and decorations that we find this time of year.  Someone was kind enough to take me to see some decorations that I would have missed.  Lovely!  How does your neighborhood look?  Did you add anything to the colorful decorating?  My mom used to decorate all year.  After Christmas she would change to a winter theme, then would come Valentine's Day, spring, Easter, and summer.  I love dressing up areas for each time of year.

Holidays Galore

Today might not be a legal holiday where you live but a number of observances occur every December 26.  It is of course the second day of Christmas, but it is also Boxing Day, Saint Stephen's Day, the first day of Kwanzaa, and in some parts of the world it is Day of Goodwill.  It's that last one I especially take note of - goodwill is such a very good thing!

give some back

Remember who good you felt when someone greeted you with a smile or a cheery hello?  Think of all the kind acts that have warmed your heart.  Hopefully you have been the recipient of lots and lots of kindness.  Each day, try to give some back.  It felt good right?  Give that great feeling to others!

Almost

Almost.  Christmas is almost here.  Tomorrow is Christmas Eve.  Of course we still have several other holidays to come too.  Enjoy them all!

The gift of presence

It seems everyone is out holiday shopping and spending lots of money that they can't afford.  I really don't need a present.  This year, consider the gift of presence instead!

Flowers for my mom

My mom passed away five years ago, and I now live in another stare so can't go and visit her final resting place when I would like to, like her birthday yesterday.  Someone else did though.  Someone who never knew Mom and scarcely knows me, went and placed flowers on her grace.  What a kind thing to do!

My Mom

I've mentioned my mother here before on a number of occasions.  She certainly was one of my kindness guides.  Now more than five years after she passed away, I still hear people who knew her remark about how kind she was.  What a great way to be remembered!  Today would have been her 92nd birthday, and I think of her with love.

Preparations

This is when I get heavily into preparations for various celebrations.  I do the traditional twelve days of Christmas (from December 25th until January 5th), but I have to have certain things on hand, so this is when I usually shop for special things, especially food.  It is also the eve of what was my mom's birthday, so I used to always be thinking of that.  Oh and a little extra cleaning to get everything ready.  With all those preparations, I like to prepare some extra kindness too.  Sometimes this time of year can be difficult for some folks, and I certainly want to help make things better!

Variety

I love December with its variety of celebrations.  Let's come up with a huge variety of ways to be kind too!

Not the 4th day of Christmas

Nope, this is not the 4th day of Christmas!  Everyone seems to be rushing things.  (If you doubt me, look it up).  Christmas doesn't END December 25th, that's when it begins.  This is however another day to be kind.  That my friends is something we can enjoy every single day!

Health update

Normally I don't like talking about me, but last week I mentioned being in the hospital and some folks have asked questions.  Thanks for your concern.  I do appreciate it, but not to worry.  It was just a minor thing.  I somehow became a bit dehydrated.  I'm fine now though!  Another great example of kindness though is you concern.  Thanks again!

More cookies

Someone brought some freshly baked cookies to work again yesterday.  What a kind (and delicious) thing to do!

In the beginning

"Of being kind, I have a few things to say.  Sometimes here I might share inspirational quotes and at other times I'll put forth ideas about kindness and how together we just might brighten up the world.  Hopefully this will help to brighten up things for YOU.  Do feel free to share these posts and your comments below are always welcome as well.  Of being kind, there are so many ways!  Let's use them all up!"    Those were the first words I wrote here back in the beginning.  How many of you have been reading since then?  How many of you share this with friends?

Kindness from the hospital

Today's post almost didn't happen.  I'm in the hospital.  Not to worry.  It isn't life-threatening.  I told them I write a daily blog which I never miss, so they have to discharge me.  (I had nothing with me, not even a phone, when I was admitted).  Well my nurse couldn't get me released - that will probably happen in the next few hours though, but she let me use her tablet.  What a a great example of kindness!

Tradition

There isn't a single holiday decoration up at my apartment and I haven't sent out any Christmas cards.  I do celebrate.  What am I waiting for then?  Well, I'm very traditional.  It isn't Christmas yet.  I'll be putting up a tree next week, and I will be singing carols, just not yet.  I'm very traditional when it comes to kindness too.  Oh how important it is to be nice to folks!  Oh and I mean always, not just during the holidays!

Remember me

You sometimes hear folks taking about being remembered after they are gone.  I think it would be far better if people remembered us while we are still here!

Monday, December 10, 2018

Rewarded

The other day, someone told me he appreciated my kindness and wanted to reward me.  "Would you prefer a gift card or a check," he asked.  Oh my!  Neither!  I was already rewarded just seeing how appreciative he was.  Besides, I don't want to be kind in hopes of some kind of gift.  We are rewarded every day by the positive reactions of those we encounter.

Sunday, December 9, 2018

Welcome Sunday Morning!

Let us all welcome Sunday morning!  Oh course it is wonderful to welcome each day with enthusiasm, but for me, Sundays are special.  It is after all the beginning of the week.  Enjoy the day.  Enjoy the week ahead.  Be kind to yourself, and most certainly, be kind to everyone!

Making people happy is great

At work, I gave someone a gift anonymously.  I was hoping to make them happy and wasn't looking for any special thanks.  Making people happy is great and for me, that is enough.  He realized though who the gift was from and sought me out to formally thank me.  Wow!  That was a very nice gesture too.  These days many people don't even say thank you when the giver's identity is obvious, and this guy went out of his way!  That's kindness.

Not just December

Most folks love the parties, the gift-giving, and all the extra happiness that seems to show up every year at this time, but I wish we could all do a better job of spreading it out through the rest of the year.  Why should one month get all the fun?  Kindness is not only for December, but for every month and every single day!

Thursday, December 6, 2018

Saint Nicholas

The sixth of December is celebrated as the feast day of Saint Nicholas, and it has nothing to do with Christmas.  The legend tells of three bags of gold coins.  Whether or not it is true is really not important.  What Nicholas has come to represent is good honest giving with no expectation of anything in return.  That's what kindness is all about.  We should be kind because we want people to be kind to us.  We should do it because it is good and proper and because it makes other people feel good.  Today, think of Saint Nicholas as you do kind things and expect nothing at all in return.  You WILL get something.  You'll get a wonderful feeling!

Senator Dole's tribute

One of the most emotional moments I have ever seen was yesterday in Washington when former Senator Robert Dole was helped out of his wheelchair and saluted the casket of Former President George Herbert Walker Bush in the Capitol Rotunda.  It was a kind gesture to be sure and it was heartwarming.  Sometimes with politics we get to caught up in policy and we forget about our shared humanity.  Thank you Senator Dole for a very moving tribute.

cookie day

Guess what today is.  (I can smell them baking in the oven).  Today is National Cookie Day.  Yum!  That gives me dozens of ideas relating to kindness.  Can you think of some too?  Let's brighten the day for some people with cookies!

Monday, December 3, 2018

loving December

I am loving December!  Is it because Hanukkah is upon us and Christmas and Kwanzaa are soon to be here too?  Is it the lights and the parties and the sales?  Is it the happier attitude that descends on so many of us?  Is it because folks seem to always be kinder around this time of year?  Maybe it's all of these things!

Today there's a difference

Many of you won't notice but today there's a difference in this blog.  Generally I rise before the sun and take a walk or run, and then refreshed from my morning ablutions, I enjoy some hot coffee while saying something here about kindness.  Normally that would have happened a couple of hours ago, but today I slept late, something I never do.  I'm fine.  I feel well rested.  I'm just late.  Like I said, most of you wouldn't even notice, but I do.  Let's all be extra kind!

Remembering and looking forward

Remembering those days when I went to a funeral five or six times a week, or made trips to Ward 86, or stood in the cold air with hundreds or others, holding a candle. Remembering the rallies, the marches, the speeches, the AIDSWalks, the quilt panels, and the meetings.  Remembering the kindness of strangers and all the folks who cared.  On this World AIDS Day, doing a lot of remembering and looking forward to the end of AIDS.

Are you happy?

Are you a happy person?  The happiest people don't have the best of everything, they make the best of everything.  Think about it.

Thursday, November 29, 2018

Don't rush

We always seem to be in such a hurry to celebrate Christmas but end up rushing past so many other wonderful moments.  I prefer to do the traditional twelve days of Christmas beginning on December 25th, so it's WAY too early now.  Let's be kind to all the other observances along the way.

Turkey jook

One of my favorite memories of kindness is the time I was given a nice big bowl or turkey jook (some people call it congee or rice porridge) a few days after Thanksgiving.  It was so delicious and I can still remember how good it made me feel.

Tuesday, November 27, 2018

Give and Remember

Of your kindness, take a moment today to remember the organizations that make a difference in your life and if you are able, donate some time or money to them.  Today is Giving Tuesday and likely you will hear a lot about giving.  I hope you will also remember all those who make this organizations happen.  Remember also two men who were slain on this date forty years ago, San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.  May their legacy continue to inspire.

A+

I'm always grateful for your feedback and I especially love it when folks respond to my questions.  Yesterday I gave a homework assignment and (you might have already read his comment, but just in case you didn't) some very wse words were shared:  "If we can each look within, love ourself more, find the compassion and acceptance within ourselves, then we will make ourselves more loving and kind. If we can each do this, then collectively, we will create a better world by making ourselves better, kinder, and more compassionate."  Thanks so much Andrew for this and your previous comments.  You get an A+ on this assignment.  You also have truly inspired me!

Homework

Here's your homework assignment:  Think up a way to make this a kinder world.  (Think up many different ways if you like).  Then, share your suggestions here so that we can all join in implementing those ideas.  Let's see how many different ideas we can come up with!

Three times this month

I have no idea how often folks read these words.  There is a counter that tells me who many people click here, but I don't know if they actually read my words, and I certainly don't know what they think.  One of the kindest things a person can do is to give feedback, and three times this month, a comment has been left.  I so appreciate your kind words.  On Wednesday an anonymous reader wrote "Wonderful thoughts! I am grateful for this blog."  Thanks!  I hope you will keep on reading!

Let's continue to be thankful

Yesterday was Thanksgiving Day of course, but why stop being thankful?  Why race ahead to a holiday that is still more than a month away.  Today is traditionally one of the least kind days of the year, as people push and shove to buy things they don't really need and end up obscuring the warm celebration we just had.  Today, let's begin a new custom.  Let's continue to be thankful and let us bring kindness everywhere we go!

spread the turkey around

One of the biggest feasts of the year.  Families serve more food on Thanksgiving Day than at any other time, but what happens with all the leftovers?  Please don't throw away good food!  Make some dinner plates or turkey sandwiches and share them with homeless people, shut-ins, or folks you know who will be alone.  A slice of cake or piece of pie will be joyously received too!

Wednesday, November 21, 2018

all week and all month

Many folks are already looking ahead to Christmas or other December holidays.  For me though it's one day and it's this month.  I love Thanksgiving - I always have.  People have been talking about it all week - all month.  Yes, the meal is wonderful and getting together with family and friends is always great, but I like the giving of thanks.  There is so much to be grateful for.  For me, it's not just what I do tomorrow, but every day.  Kindness is important every day, and so is gratitude!

Kindness of Ellen

I think the first time I ever saw Ellen DeGeneres was on Johnny Carson's old Tonight Show, and I have loved her ever since. She's a fine actress, comedian, and television host, but there is much more. She makes a difference. Ellen is famous for ending her tv show with "Be kind to one another." It's not just a saying though - she means it, and you can see numerous ways she practices what she preaches, every single day.  How many checks has she given to needy people on her program?  Oh my!

Monday, November 19, 2018

Feeling rested

I am feeling so rested this morning!  How about you?  Did you sleep well?  Now, go out and make it a great day and of course, be kind!

Sunday, November 18, 2018

Can you smell the turkey yet?

It's just a few days until Thanksgiving.  Can you smell the turkey yet?  I know many folks get started early.  If it were up to me, every day would be a day of thanksgiving.  We do have a lot to be thankful for!  Think about it this week.

Ideas

What random act can you do today, to make someone's day? Pay for the meal of the person behind you in the drive-through. Give blood. Call or visit a homebound person. Say something nice to everyone you meet. Volunteer at an organization that needs help. Let the person behind you in the grocery store go ahead of you in line. Say nice things randomly on people's facebook timeline. Call an estranged friend or family member. The ideas are endless!

Richelle Goodrich says

In her book Making Wishes, Richelle Goodrich says that "Kindness is a magical spell - performed by enlightened beings - meant to enchant hearts and lift weary souls that they might fly."  Oh my!  What a beautiful way of saying it!

Be kind.  You have no idea what the impact will be, but I'm here to tell you, it's going to be good!

Teddy bears

My mom collected teddy bears and I have a large amount of those bears in my home.  How can you look at or hold a teddy bear and not feel happy?  Well I mention this because today is American Teddy Bear Day.  Celebrate!

hashtag

There have already been a whole bunch of tweets on twitter and posts on other social media, but World Kindness Day is not just a hashtag.  The goal of course is just like mine, to spread kindness throughout the world every day.  A special day though is a good beginning.  Let's all see how many kind things we can do today!

Monday, November 12, 2018

November 12

Yes, today is November 12th, but what else?  Monday, yes.  It is of course another day to show kindness toward others.  I never get tired of saying that.  I hope the world grows a bit kinder each day!

Sunday, November 11, 2018

those who serve

Today is Veterans Day in the United States, a day set aside to honor all who have served in our military.  Honoring them does not mean you are in favor of conflict or war.  Show them some love and kindness today.

Saturday, November 10, 2018

Over two years

Over two years ago I began writing this blog and each morning I say something here about kindness.  Many of you probably thought I would tire out by now, huh?  We must never get tired of being kind though.  Kindness makes the world a better place!

The Kind Bus Driver

The weather is getting colder where I live, and a local bus driver I know told me that one of her daily passengers boarded the other day, blowing on her hands and commenting on how cold they were.  The driver stopped by a dollar store at the end of her shift and purchased some gloves that were two pair for a dollar.  These weren't fancy elegant gloves, but they are protection from the elements.  Yesterday she gave them to her passenger and told me the lady was delighted.  Such a simple act of kindness not only helped one person, but also inspired me!

Kind songs

Songs with the word kind in the title - how many are there?  Now I'm speaking here of when kind is used as an adjective.  As a noun (meaning sort), there are many.  I was thinking long and hard and came up with only three:  Try A Little Kindness by Glen Campbell, Please Be Kind by Frank Sinatra, and Tim McGraw's Humble and Kind.  Are there others?  There are certainly songs that encourage kindness

Even better

It's going to be a great day.  You know what would make it even better.  Kindness.  Kindness always makes things better!

Tuesday, November 6, 2018

VOTE

I'm always talking about kindness, and I hope I am always doing kind things.  Being kind to our neighbors, kind to animals, kind to the land and to the spaces that surround us - this is all part of our civic duty. So is voting.  Today is Election Day and each one of us has a voice.  Be heard my friends.  VOTE!

Happy birthday O sister O mine

I have said this many times, but it continues to be true.  One of the kindest people I know, is my sister, who is always doing things for me, and for others.  Today is her birthday and I'm going to try to show some of that same kindness toward her and to others.

Thomas Carlyle said

I just came across a lovely quote from philosopher and essayist Thomas Carlyle.  He said "Without kindness there can be no true joy."

Saturday, November 3, 2018

Pretty simple

Being kind is really pretty simple, especially if you take a moment and think.  You don't need a lot of extra money or time.  You don't need special training.  All you need is to care.  It can begin with something as simple as your smile.

Friday, November 2, 2018

Remembering them

Today is a day when in many churches, the departed are remembered.  (Some combine observances and remember the departed with all the saints on November 1st).  In your kindness, stop for a moment today and think of a favorite relative or good friend who has passed away.  Perhaps a gettogether with a mutual friend to remember that deceased person might be helpful.

Thursday, November 1, 2018

Long-time favorite

November has been my favorite month for a long, long time.  It may have originally been because of those extra days off from school for Veterans Day and Thanksgiving but later I'm sure the pumpkins and fall leaves had something to do with it.  I LOVE Thanksgiving Day too.  Of course I love every day!  It gives me more opportunities to put smiles on all the faces I see.

Goodbye friend

A very dear kind man passed away this week and I will miss him.  Last night as I reflected on his life all I could think of was the nice generous way in which he had lived.  What a wonderful way to be remembered.  I hope I can learn a lot from his example.

We ALL can

I can.  You can.  We ALL can!  Every single one of us can make this a kinder world.  Let's work together and make it so!

Stop the shootings

Returning from my morning walk, I was listening to news of yet another shooting.  One student was shot and another student was taken into custody at a North Carolina high school first thing today. There have been 47,221 gun incidents in the US this year, resulting in 11,985 deaths.  THIS MUST STOP!  It's not safe to go to school or to church or temple.  Sad.  Very sad.  We must make this a priority.

The hate must end

Eight men and three women, including a pair of brothers and a married couple, were murdered yesterday inside the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA.  I spend a lot of time speaking about kindness, but I simply must address this latest incident of hate.  Too many lives are lost.  Too many families are injured.  There is no good thing that comes from hate.  We need to return to kindness and love.  The hate must end.  This has to become a priority!

Saturday, October 27, 2018

yummy chocolate

Tomorrow is National Chocolate Day!  Of course it is not the only chocolate day.  We had another one on July 7th and then there was International Chocolate Day on September 13th.  Oh and don't forget the chocolate that will come up on Wednesday for Halloween.  Don't you think every day could be chocolate day?  It's just like kindness - there is never too much!

Friday, October 26, 2018

Boo

I have been seeing so many costumes lately and a lot of early trick-or-treating.  Yes, we used to confine it to October 31st, but what's the harm in a few extra days?  Be kind to the kids and to those who sponsor Halloween events.  We can all use some more fun!

Kind tweet

Yesterday afternoon I received a kind tweet from someone who has read this blog:  "you have some great nuggets of wisdom and kindness on your blog!"  He didn't have to reach out to me of course, but what a kind thing to do.  That's what kindness is all about.  You don't have to, but it sure is nice.

Wednesday, October 24, 2018

can mean a lot

The smallest acts of kindness can mean a lot to someone - an awful lot!  Spread kindness today, and every day.

Tuesday, October 23, 2018

Tell me a story

Tell me a story about someone who has shown you kindness.  How did it make you feel?  What makes you remember that kindness?  I'd really love to know!

Trans Kindness

Civil rights protections have expanded over the years, to better include transgender people, and in fact to better include all people, but in the past day or so a very troubling reversal has come.  The White House is responsible for an effort that would narrow the definition of gender to male or female, and for that assignment to be unchangeable from birth.  This is not only unkind, it is downright cruel.  You cannot erase an entire segment of the population.  Protections should be unnecessary, but meanspirited attacks like this threaten us all.

Specialist

These days there seems to be an expert for just about everything and folks seem more often to focus their energies in to one or two areas becoming specialists in the field.  Is there anyone who specializes in kindness?  What a wonderful specialty that would be!

Saturday, October 20, 2018

Another fortune

Do you read the fortunes you receive in fortune cookies?  I frequently get ones that have to do with kindness.  At lunch yesterday:  "Make someone smile today and feel your heart smile too."

Friday, October 19, 2018

candycorn

It seems you only see candy corn at this time of year.  I love those sweet colorful candies.  Let's get the candy manufacturers to show a little kindness and have this available all year long.

I'm here for you

Friendship is not about who you have known the longest, but rather who walked into your life, said "I'm here for you" and then proved it.

Pay Back A Friend

I'm told it was a bank promotion that brought about today's Pay Back A Friend Day, but whoever did it, I like the idea.  It doesn't have to mean pay back money.  It can also acknowledge the many things our friends to for us that we often take for granted.  Today, let's be aware of all the giving and be sure to also give back.

Tuesday, October 16, 2018

Wear Something Gaudy

Want another fun observance?  Well tomorrow is Wear Something Gaudy Day!  I kid you not.  Doing silly fun things can certainly brighten our days, so why not?  In your kindness share that crazy hat or boa with a friend or co-worker.  Before you go to bed tonight, go through your closet and find something really outrageous to wear tomorrow.

Monday, October 15, 2018

Thoughts about kindness

If you are visiting this blog for the first time, I write some thoughts about kindness here every single day.  Sometimes I might quote someone else.  Always I try to me encouraging.  I think the world can always use more kindness.  I would be thrilled to hear from other folks too.  Are folks generally kind to you?  What can all of us do to make this a kinder world?

Sunday, October 14, 2018

volunteer to be kind

Yesterday I was at a women's health fair with the hospital where I volunteer.  What a wonderful event.  I saw so much kindness and so many people were thanking me and my fellow volunteers for our service.  Giving my time really makes me feel good, and it is also a great feeling to be appreciated.

Beautiful words about beautiful day

I've quoted a lot of people here who speak of kindness, but one of my favorite thoughts are these words from George Elliston:  "How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it!"

Friday, October 12, 2018

Another person

Whenever you encounter another person, you have another marvelous opportunity to again practice kindness.  Don't waste that opportunity.

Thursday, October 11, 2018

come out

Today is National Coming Out Day, and while lgbtq visibility is important, so is the visibility of allies.  Want to know what is even more important?  Equality.  Let's make this a world where everyone is treated equally with kindness and mutual respect.

Bring your teddy bear

Today is National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work/School Day (observed on the second Wednesday of every October).   I don't really know how or why this came about, but I have a huge collection of teddy bears (which were my mom's) and anything that has to do with these cute creatures has to be nice and kind!

Tuesday, October 9, 2018

Just be kind

Your random act of kindness can add happiness to someone's life. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give to someone.  It doesn't have to be for any special reason.  Just be kind!

Monday, October 8, 2018

More kind things we can do

Give a bag of groceries to a homeless person. Open the door for another person. Leave an extra-large tip for the waitperson. Tell a bus or taxi driver how much you appreciate their driving.  Give coffee to people on their way to work in the morning.  Leave a treat or handmade note of thanks for a delivery person or mail carrier. Treat someone to fresh fruit.  Sing at a nursing home.  Give another driver your parking spot.

Sunday, October 7, 2018

Endless ways of being kind

Volunteer at an organization that needs help.  Go through your closets and find several nice items and then donate them to a shelter. Buy books for a day care or school. Give toys to the children at a shelter. Volunteer to fix up an elderly person's home. Buy a pack of brightly colored stickers and give them to children you meet during the day. Let the person behind you in the grocery store go ahead of you in line. There are endless ways of being kind!

Sharing ideas

While I am the writer of this blog and have done a lot of thinking about kindness, I don't have all the answers, so I could use a bit of help.  Would any of you be willing to share some ideas?  There are so many ways to be kind!

Friday, October 5, 2018

Smile Day

World Smile Day is celebrated on the first Friday in October every year.  It was the idea of  coined Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, who also created the Smiley Face back in 1963.  We can never have too many smiles, right?  Share the kindness and the smiles and thank Harvey for urging us on!

No rewards needed

I love doing kind things for others.  It's just a part of who I am.  I don't need thanks or any special rewards either.  Yes, it is nice when folks say thank you and it's also very nice to be recognized, but that isn't my reason for being nice and kind.  When no rewards are needed, you are motivated by something greater, and there is a different kind of reward, one that you feel through your entire being.

Leftovers

Kindness is wrapping up your leftovers to give to the homeless person you pass every day on your street.  Give him the rest of that open package of cookies too!

Tuesday, October 2, 2018

send a card or letter

People like to know that other folks are thinking of them and what better way to show this than sending a card or letter.  Even an email shows you care.  One of the kindest things a person can do is to care about another human being!

Wear Blue

Blue Shirt Day is a World Day of Bullying Prevention, which takes place annually on the first Monday of every October.  All students and school employees are asked to wear a blue shirt as a visible sign of unity against bullies.  Sadly, bullying isn't confined to schools and so wear blue wherever you are and show love and kindness toward everyone.  So no to all bullying!

Be an angel

In some churches and in some parts of the world, the Archangel Michael is remembered today.  Some folks commemorate ALL angels.  There is also Guardian Angel Day coming up on October 2nd.  Whether or not you observe any of these, it's a perfect time to BE and angel and show some extra kindness!

It's our anniversary

Do you know what today is?  It's our anniversary!  Two years ago on this date, I began writing this daily blog.  I don't know if it has had an effect of anyone, but I know it has done things for me.  I now think more often about kind acts and hopefully have become a kinder person.

Remembering Wilson

Wilson Fernandez Fang was one of the kindest people I ever met.  He was always doing things for others and making a difference in the world.  Wilson's generosity, caring, and unwavering faith in God endeared him to just about everyone he met.  I miss him and think of him often.  His memory helps me remember the importance of being kind to one another.  It was three years ago on this date that Wilson was born to eternal life.  Rest in peace dear friend.

Your meaning

Kindness.  What does it mean to YOU?  It's easy to talk about being kind, but are we all on the same page here?  What is your meaning?

Tuesday, September 25, 2018

Tell them now

I'm seeing such a wonderful outpouring of positive statements about people who have recently died.  That of course is a good thing, but I can't help think about the thoughts that weren't expressed during a person's lifetime.  If you love them and respect them, tell them now.  Let them hear it directly from you during their lifetime.  Don't wait until after they are gone.

More cherries

Today is National Cherries Jubilee Day, not to be confused with Cherry Popover Day which began the month. (The cherry farmers must have a good agency backing them up, huh)? Anyway, how kind it would be to make a nice cherries jubilee for your family and your friends! Wow.

How do you spell kindness?

It is probably a little different for each of us (and there is no right or wrong answer), but how do you spell kindness?   F-R-E-S-H-L-Y-B-A-K-E-D-B-R-E-A-D.  Oh my!

Go ahead

Remember the catchphrase spoken by the character Harry Callahan in the movie Sudden Impact?  "Go ahead, make my day!"  Well today, make someone's day.  No, not like in the movie.  Just do something kind.  There are so many possibilities.  In fact I think together we can make many people's day!

Gratitude Day

Back in 1965 at the International East-West Center in Hawaii during a Thanksgiving Dinner, those in attendance decided to hold a gratitude gathering the following September 21st in their various home countries. What grew out of that meal is an annual event now, and an excellent idea.  There is so much to be grateful for, huh?  Think about that today.  To whom do you wish to show gratitude?

Kindness always

Be kind today, and tomorrow, and the following day.  Be kind this week and next.  Be kind this fall and this winter.  Be kind next year.  Kindness always!

You like me

When Sally Field won her first Academy Award in 1980 for her role in Norma Rae, she said from the stage, "You like me, right now, you like me!"  I can still see her beaming with happiness.  It is a wonderful feeling to know that you are liked.  One of the kindest things we can do is to let people know how important they are to us.  Who do you really like?  Have you ever told them so?

National Respect Day

I cannot get the song out of my head
R - E - S - P - E - C - T

Don't just sing about it though.  Today is National Respect Day and one of the kindest things we can do is to show respect for others!

Here's an alarming idea

Today, don't just be kind, be extra kind.  Set an alarm to go off frequently (hourly if you can) during the day and then when that happens stop what you are doing and text, call, email, or otherwise contact someone in your life and tell them what they mean to you.  If your workday just won't accommodate this, do it in the hours after work!

Sunday, September 16, 2018

Happy Sunday!

Is Sunday your favorite day of the week?  It is for many because it is the day when more folks are away from work, school, or other obligations.  Sundays can be extra happy too because we can use some of that extra time to put smiles on faces, even the faces of strangers.  Church, a ballgame, a stroll through the park - see how many places you can bring happiness today!

Middle of the month

I can't believe it's the middle of the month already!  Next thing you know we will be drinking pumpkin spice lattes!  (Oh, that already started)?  There's a feeling of fall in the air.  I so many places, this is one of the most beautiful times of the year.  Mother nature is so kind to us, be sure to return the favor.  Be kind to the environment.  Enjoy the beauty of the earth and share that beauty with others.

Just one

Any day when I know that I made someone happy is a good day.  I don't have to make the whole world happy or even all the people in my town.  Just one.  Just one person, and now I am happy too.  Of course I always try for more than one, but just one is all it takes!

Heigh-ho! Come to the fair!

Across from where I live they have been working for days. It's the County Fair and it opens today! What a great place for happy moments and a good helping of kindness. Do you ever go to your county fair? Always a lot of fun. Heigh-ho! Come to the fair!

Animals need kindness too

Do you have any pets at home?  Are there any animals around the places you frequent?  Sometimes when we talk about kindness, we forget about the animals - they need kindness too.  Treat the animals of the world with the same love, kindness, and respect that you would like to have shown toward you.

Be gentle

There is no rulebook for grieving.  We all do it in different ways.  While the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 that claimed nearly 3,000 and injured over 6,000 others, are now seventeen years in our past, it is still a difficult day for many.  Be gentle with folks today.  Their mourning may be different than yours.  Never forget to horror of that day and remember that the solution to hate, is love.

Who doesn't like kindness

Let's see a show of hands.  Who doesn't like kindness?  {no hands went up}  I mean what is there we wouldn't like?  Seriously?  Rude or mean people are a turn-off.  Kind and loving people are just the opposite.  I most certainly like kindness!

Today's the day

I don't know who created National Teddy Bear Day, but today's the day. I know it was President Theodore Roosevelt who inspired the cuddly stuffed animals and New York store owner Morris Michtom is credited with making the fist one. My mom collected teddy bears, and when she passed away, many of hers came to live with me. I also gave a lot of them to the San Francisco Fire Department. The Chief told me it is comforting to a child who was just in an accident or fire to be given a cute bear. There is a small one that my mom used to order in large quantities to give to special people in her life.

Warming my heart

Warming my heart is a pretty easy task.  When I see kindness, however big or small, it always makes me feel good.  When I know that someone is smiling because of something I did, it warms my heart.  I really think the kindness movement is spreading!  Heartwarming indeed.

Courtesy song

For some reason, I woke up this morning remembering this little song:  "When you want it say please,  When you get it say thank you.  When someone says thank you, then you answer you're welcome!"  I learned that little courtesy song way back in elementary school.  I certainly never goes out of style.

Everywhere

And kindness spread throughout the world.  What a great thought, huh?  Kindness everywhere.  It shouldn't just be a thought.  It should be reality.  We can make it happen.  There are some things that might be out of our control, but this is not one of them.  Let's pitch in and let us see kindness in every part of the world!

September random acts

How about some random acts of kindness this September morning?  I think kindness is an everyday thing, but it doesn't hurt to do some special unexpected things from time to time, like surprising the office with homemade cookies, or buy the latte for the stranger behind you at the coffee counter, or leaving an extra big tip for your server at lunch.  Any ideas for some random things you might do today?

Kindness takes away the sting

On the news last night I heard of a young girl who had been hit by a car while on her bike.  She was injured as a result and her backpack with schoolwork and her tablet were stolen.  Sad that things like this happen.  The good side of the story is the outpouring of kindness.  She was given a new tablet, backpack, and even money.  So many folks came forward out of concern for the girl.  The wonderful kindness takes away the sting of the mean act.  Another reason for more kindness!

Honoring labor

I'm not saying that grilling, camping, or even shopping those sales is a bad thing, but take a moment sometime today and recall the origins of this holiday. Labor Day came about back in the late 19th century because by trade unionists proposed a day to honor the contributions of the labor movement.  Kindly take a moment to think about that, and be thankful.

A month of courtesy

Did you know that September is National Courtesy Month? Courtesy and kindness go hand in hand, so I just know we have a great month! Of course as I always say, there is never a time when kindness is not appropriate, so show a lot of kindness and courtesy and brighten up the world!

Cherry popovers

Today is National Cherry Popover Day! It really is!  The thought of a nice hot cherry popover makes my mouth water.  Oh I know!  A great way to celebrate today would be to make a nice big batch of popovers and then share them at work and with friends.  What a kind thing to do.  I suppose you could throw in some lemon popovers too.

School daze

Remember when school didn't begin each year until early September?  In most places it was the day after Labor Day.  Now it begins much earlier and where I live, it is year round.  (There is a brief break each June).  Are we being kind to our kids or are we putting them into a daze?

First thoughts

Already blogging about folks giving back to society, I was thinking two years ago of a simple thing we all can do to make a difference:  be kind to others.  I began this blog a few days later and was thinking then more of the various random acts of kindness that we often hear about.  I've mentioned those acts here before and quoted lots of people, but from my first thoughts about doing this blog came a great gift for me.  I try to be a better person.  I try to continually be more kind.  I intend to keep on trying too!

so many happy birthday wishes

Oh my!  Yesterday I received so many happy birthday wishes.  There were some cards in the mail and numerous social media posts.  The day began with a special birthday breakfast with my sister.  There was so much kindness shown.  I am truly grateful.

Get out those party hats!

Yes, today is my birthday.  I was thinking the other day about how kindness seems to always be magnified at special events like birthdays and anniversaries.  Oh how I love a good celebration, but don't just party for me, party for everyone!  I'm inspired to treat everyone like every single day is a birthday for them.  Get out those party hats folks!  Let's celebrate life!

Too much hate

There is too much hate in the world.  Yesterday a mass shooting in Florida injured several and took more lives.  Why?  Why do we let this keep happening?  In another place, a nine-year-old boy took his own life after being bullied  for being gay.  We need a world of kindness, love, and respect.  Say no to hate - ALL hate.  We CAN change things!

Remembering the kindness of John McCain

It is heartwarming to read the many kind messages about Senator John McCain who passed away yesterday.  His daughter said some wonderful things about the father who "taught me how to live." Meghan McCain also said now that her dad is gone, she's motivated more than ever to spend her lifetime living up to "his example, his expectations, and his love."  Words I see from so many to describe him are kind and honorable.  What a great way to be remembered!

The Special Ends

The special week of kindness ends today.  No, that doesn't mean we should stop being nice to each other.  We need to keep the kindness with us always!  How did you do this week though?  By thinking about it, do you think you became a little kinder?  Perhaps we should try this again from time to time.

Friday, August 24, 2018

closer to the end

As we get closer to the end of our self-proclaimed special week of kindness, how has it been?  Do you think this has helped you to be a bit kinder?  Any stories you want to share?  Let us finish this week with a bang!

Thursday, August 23, 2018

Five

Today is day five in our week of special kindness.  (How are you doing with that?  I hope this is encouraging some to be more kind)!  Oh and it is also just five days until my birthday.  Woo hoo!  That just made me think of another way to show kindness - treat folks they way you would on their birthday, but treat them that way every day!

Wednesday, August 22, 2018

Special Number Four

Trying to do some extra special things this week.  I hope you're joining me.  It's our fourth day and I have decided to spend some extra time on social media posting encouraging messages and reading ones from other folks.  I'll check out Instagram, facebook and twitter right now and then throughout the day, and hopefully my kind words will brighten someone's day!

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

The Third

This week we are trying to put some extra effort on being kind people.  Perhaps it already comes naturally for you.  Wonderful!  I still need to work on it myself.  I'm not perfect.  This is the third day of this special week and today I want to make sure that everyone I encounter, sees me smiling.  I'm not talking about a sick demented expression that looks like I am up to no good, but a pleasant, happy face.

Monday, August 20, 2018

2nd Day Special Week

Kindness is an always thing.  It's not just reserved for special occasions.  Therefore doing a "special week" might seem odd.  I goal though is always to make me a kinder person, and hopefully some of you as well.  So, each day this week, let's try a little harder.  I think I'll stop and get some flowers at the grocery store and then hand one to everyone I meet this morning.

A Special Week of Kindness

It's summertime.  It's the beginning of another week in August.  How about we add something to the calendar?  Let's proclaim this a special week of kindness!  As you know, I wish we were always kind to everyone, and I try so hard to be kinder myself, but if we put the spotlight on our kindness during the next seven days, perhaps we will all try even harder.  It's certainly worth a try!

Saturday, August 18, 2018

take care of yourself

When you are in good health and full of energy, it is so much easier to be kind.  Exercise, eat right, drink plenty of water, and get regular medical checkups.  In other words, take care of yourself!  Being kind certainly includes being kind to YOU!

Friday, August 17, 2018

National Non Profit Day

The spotlight today is on volunteers, benefactors, and all those who are part of nonprofit organizations.  One of the kindest things a person can do is to give back to the community and make a difference, so be thinking about that on this National Nonprofit Day and perhaps it's time to get more involved.

Thursday, August 16, 2018

Everyone

Everyone deserves love, kindness and respect. Everyone. That includes you.

Happy birthday Mrs Child

The wonderful chef, author, and tv personality Julia Child once said  "A party without cake, is just a meeting."  Today would have been her 106th birthday, so let's eat some cake!

Tuesday, August 14, 2018

What's that you say?

Sometimes being kind is as simple as opening you mouth.  Really.  I mean it.  Tell people what they mean to you.  Compliments clerks for their service.  If somebody truly makes your day, tell them.  The world needs more positive talk.  Begin with a nice cheery "hello" or "good morning"!  What's that you say?  You like my friendly attitude?  Aw  You are so kind!

Monday, August 13, 2018

banana bread

Last night there was a knock on my door in the early evening.  I wasn't expecting anyone, so I was someone surprised.  I was even more surprised to open the door to my neighbor standing there with some banana bread she had baked.  What a lovely, thoughtful, and kind gift!  (Oh and it was delicious too). There was a time when neighbors interacted more.  How lovely if there were to begin once again.

Who was on the phone

Texting seems to be the preferred form of communication these days, but I will always prefer the sound of a human voice.  For me there is something special about a telephone call.  It isn't just a kind gesture.  It also says "I care" and "I'm here for you."

Saturday, August 11, 2018

Touched

Being touched by kindness - what a wonderful thing.  I love when someone does a kind act for me.  I really do.  It warms my heart.  I also love witnessing acts of kindness.  There is something very special about seeing someone do a really nice thing for someone else.  Of course I love doing those kind things.  All these things touch me.

Friday, August 10, 2018

99

Folks seem to live longer these days and if you can have a long life and a healthy one, how wonderful, right?  I have a neighbor who turns 99 today.  She is always smiling and seems to truly enjoy life.  I know she brings joy to those around her!  She isn't an internet user, but I'll say it here anyway:  Happy birthday Alfie!

Thursday, August 9, 2018

August morning kindness

From time to time I have listed various random acts of kindness.  On this bright August morning, I have a few for you.  As you go about your day, pick up trash. Call or visit a homebound person. Pay a compliment at least once a day. Transport someone who can’t drive. Make telephone calls in support of equality urging others to put aside hate. Say something nice to everyone you meet today. Send a treat to a school or day-care center. Volunteer at an organization that needs help. Any ideas you want to share?

Here comes the rain again

Rain.  We need it, but most of us don't like getting caught out in it.  When a storm comes up suddenly, and you get soaked, that certainly isn't pleasant.  I remember years ago when a popup storm was pouring down on people.  A man rain into a store and bought dozens of umbrellas, which he then handed out for free.  Now that's kindness!

Tuesday, August 7, 2018

Kindest of all

I'm sure people have done kind things for you in the past.  It feels good, huh?  That's why I like encouraging kindness.  Think for a moment about all those wonderful things that folks have done for you in the past.  What was the kindest of all?

Monday, August 6, 2018

Kindness Rinse Repeat

Did you ever notice the directions on a shampoo bottle?  Most likely you only read it once.  Shampooing your hair becomes habit.  Lather, rinse, repeat.  Pretty easy, huh?  It's like that with kindness too.  If we practice kindness often enough it becomes habit.

Sunday, August 5, 2018

Looking out my window

First thing every morning, I open my blinds and then while checking overnight email and morning news, I sip my coffee and check the immediate beauty around me.  Looking out my window I can see if I will need any kind of protection when I go out on my walk minutes later.  (All of that happens before I write this).  This morning I could see a lady exercising outside when I first peered out.  A little while later she was still outside as I began my walk.  "Good morning!" she beamed as I approached her.  She already made my day and it's on seven o'clock.

Saturday, August 4, 2018

More than a slogan

"Be kind to one another" isn't just a slogan for Ellen DeGeneres.  How many checks has she given to needy people on her tv program, for example?  How often does she share stories about people who do good for others?  I've said it before and I will say it again, I love the wonderful example she sets for us!

Friday, August 3, 2018

She didn't have to share

There's a lady I work with who will frequently bring in a couple of plates of homemade cookies.  Sometimes she makes brownies instead.  They are so delicious!  Everyone enjoys them.  There must be eighty to a hundred cookies.  That has to be time consuming, baking them all.  She didn't have to share.  Nobody has to.  What a great thing it is though!  Her kindness is appreciated by so many!

Thursday, August 2, 2018

Going to be a great day

Do you ever spring out of bed, rested and refreshed, and just knowing that it's going to be a great day?  How wonderful if that was the way it always is, huh?  We actually control a lot of that.  Want a kinder world?  We control a lot of that too!  We don't control the actions of others, but if we set out to be kind and nice, some of that is bound to rub off on those around us.

Wednesday, August 1, 2018

it's a celebration

Can I celebrate this entire month?  August is my birthday month.  At the very least, I should be extra kind to everyone!

Tuesday, July 31, 2018

It doesn't have to be special

Being kind isn't just performing some random act for someone else.  It's a way of life.  Kindness is something that should always be with us.  It doesn't have to be special but at the same time it is very special.

Monday, July 30, 2018

kindness to our friends

Today is International Friendship Day. Did you even know there was such a thing?  Reach out to others today.  Remember that friendship begins with kindness.

Your thoughts

What is going through your head as you read this?  Have you read this blog before?  Did you stumble upon it or did someone tell you about it?  Would you like to see more kindness in this world?  Share your thought.  I know I'd love to hear from you!

The Kindness of Michelle

Yesterday I experienced kindness from several people, but I want to tell you about Michelle.  I'm a hospital volunteer and that means doing various tasks, but in the middle of the day I was suddenly on the needing side instead of the giving side.  A wonderful hospital employee named Michelle (and whom I already knew) just happened to be walking down the hall behind me.  She saw that I was in distress, detoured from what she was doing to get me quickly to the Emergency Department, stayed with me while I was admitted, and said to let her know how I was doing.  Some might argue that she was simply doing her job.  Yes, all of us in the hospital should help someone in distress, but she went beyond that, doing much more than she had to.  She cared.  I might have written about her someday even if yesterday had not happened.  As I mentioned, I already knew Michelle, and kindness is something I had seen from her before.

Christmas in July

At a Christmas in July event yesterday I saw so many examples of kindness, it brought me great joy!  People were buying gifts like crazy, and sometimes they were getting gifts for folks they hardly knew.  I hard one woman say, "I can't wait to see the look on his face!"  Later on I heard another person remark "I love making people happy."  Let me tell you, they sure made me happy.

Those wonderful memories

Yesterday I spoke of Miss Sally, a wonderful memory from my past.  Do you have someone like Miss Sally in your memories?  Hopefully we all have a lot of kind people in our lives, but is there a particular memory that really stands out?  Tell us about it!

Wednesday, July 25, 2018

Kind people in your life

With each day I try to be a kinder person.  I encourage kindness here every morning in these short messages.  In your life though, is there a lot of kindness?  Who are the kindest people you know?  Are they folks you want to imitate?

Incredible Heat

Record temperatures are being recorded in many places this week.  Be careful.  Stay hydrated.  Don't spend too much time in the sun.  Be careful of children, the elderly, and animals.  They can be more sensitive to the extreme heat.  Be kind to yourself too.  Don't overdo anything in the excessive heat.

Monday, July 23, 2018

Stay healthy

Take care of yourself.  Stay healthy and fit.  When you’re healthy and energetic, it is so much easier to be kind.

Sunday, July 22, 2018

The beauty of nature

Yesterday was filled with thunder and lightening and lots of rain, but it made the trees and plants and grass so much more beautiful.  Today when I woke up and saw the sun poking its head above the horizon, I could just tell it was going to be a beautiful day.  Walk with kindness and make it even more beautiful!

The kindness of fundraising

I'm seeing all kinds of online fundraisers these days.  How wonderful that people not only make donations of money, but that folks are also taking the time to setup these fundraising events to help channel funds to their favorite charities.  Such a kind thing to do.  I'll be doing one next month in honor of my latest personal orbit around the sun.

Sweets for the sweet

Lollipops have been satisfying the sweet tooth for a very long time.  My great aunt used to make them in molds - many different shapes and flavors.  You can buy whole bags of them in stores for just a few bucks.  Why do I mention this?  Today is National Lollipop Day and what a kind thing it would be to purchase a few bags and hand them out to family, friends, perhaps even co-workers.  Not only is this a kind thing, but it's pretty sweet too!

Thursday, July 19, 2018

feedback

The counter says a lot of folks visit this blog.  Of course we don't know if you actually read the words here.  Perhaps a bit of feedback would help.  Leave a comment below.  Say a kind word or two.  Encourage us with a story of kindness.  We'd really love to hear from you!

Acknowledgements

Those acknowledgements in our life are important.  When someone does something special for you, thank them.  If you are a charity and you receive a donation, acknowledge it, and say thanks!  When people do exceptional things and make a difference in the world, see that they are recognized.  It is kind and it is courteous, and it just might make their day!

thorn bushes have roses

Abraham Lincoln once said "We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses."   What a great way of looking at things!  I love a positive attitude, don't you?

Ugly dress

If a woman asks you about the hideous dress she is wearing, there is no great need for you to say it is ugly.  If you are spouse or close friend, you might make a suggestion about how she might improve her appearance, but this is one of those times when it is okay to skirt the truth.  Oh and if she didn't ask, what does it accomplish if you simply blurt out that the dress is ugly?  The kind thing to do is sometimes to simply keep your mouth shut.

Give me a scoop

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. You know the saying, right?  Well did you know that today is National Ice Cream Day?  Some of the country’s best ice cream joints are actually giving away some of those delicious icy desserts.  What could be more kind?  Maybe this would be a great day to also treat some of your friends.

What an incredible gift

Making people happy, being kind to one another - this is such an incredible gift to the world.  When we make others feel good, we make ourselves feel good, but it doesn't stop there.  Those around us are inspired.  Those who hear of our kind acts and the happiness they bring, are generally inspired as well.  One little act of kindness can circle the globe and bring kindness to the entire planet.

Thirteen can be lucky

People are often afraid of the number thirteen, especially Friday the 13th.  Well today is a 13 and a Friday.  It doesn't have to be unlucky though.  Be kind to yourself.  Don't add unnecessary worry.  Be kind to others too.  I think we can make this a very lucky day - certainly a very kind one!

Simplify

Today as you go about your business, do or stop doing things to simplify your day.  Why?  Well it is always good to make things more simple, but today is National Simplicity Day.

July morning kindness

Every now and then I share some random acts of kindness here, and on this wonderful July morning, I thought I would offer these: Volunteer to read to kids at your local library,  pay for the person behind you in the movie line, say nice things randomly to facebook and twitter friends, donate time at a senior center, bring flowers to work and share them with coworkers, and simply smile!

Awareness

Part of being kind comes down to awareness I think.  We need to take a moment and think about how we are acting and how others see us.  Does our tone of voice seem friendly?  Do our actions bring joy or happiness to others?  More and more I try to be aware of everything I do and I am always grateful to hear the thoughts of others.

The Red Power Ranger

Sometimes celebrities inspire us in ways we might not expect.  I suppose you don't even have to be a celebrity for that to be true.  We ALL can inspire.  The actor who is the red Power Ranger always inspires me.  He seems like such a nice and kind person.  Shouldn't we all want to be thought of that way?

Could you think of any?

Yesterday I asked for you to list some simple ways to show kindness.  Did you think of any?  How about just lending a hand to someone who needs it or giving someone a great big hug?   A simple smile is a kind act.  Pay someone a compliment, pick up litter, write a kind note, hold a door for someone, donate something to a worthy cause, and so many other things.  Any ideas you have are always welcome!

Your simple random acts

Remember all the times I listed various random acts of kindness?  Did you ever do any of them?  What inspires you to do those simple kind acts?  Help us all out and list some ways in the comments below.

All those donations

I see kindness expressed through donations all the time.  During the year I raise funds for various causes, and it warms my heart when folks contribute.  Recently someone I don't even know gave a large monetary gift.  I see lots of donations come in at the hospital where I volunteer too.  People give money and there are also a lot of donations of used books and magazines, and of course donations of time.

Enjoy every day!

How was your holiday?  Were you able to do something fun yesterday?  Let's carry the spirit with us going forward.  There's no reason why every day should not be enjoyable!  We can make other folks happy too!

Fabulous Fourth

It was 242 years ago that the United States declared our independence.  Today, celebrate.  Be proud of our country, but work to make it better, and kinder.

Price tag

So what is the price tag for kindness?  How much money will you need to spend to be kind?  Absolutely nothing.  Kindness is priceless, yet it is one of the most valuable things we will ever encounter!

He's a real saint

I'm sure you have heard people say that someone "is a real saint" before.  It of course means that do some wonderful caring things.  I have a friend like that.  We live in different cities now and seldom see each other, but he calls me often so we can catch up and always wants to know how I am doing.  He also regularly visits several different senior citizens, volunteers at various causes including a food bank, and spends money helping out folks in need.  That is just a fraction of the good things he does.  To call him a kind person is a huge understatement.

July 2018

Today begins July 2018 - no big surprise.  I'm sure you have a calendar.  I'm sure you also know I'm going to suggest another month of kindness.  Why not?  Let's all pitch in every single day and make this a kinder world!

More than I can say

I just got back from a short trip and I saw so many acts of kindness, it truly warmed my heart.  I already told you about one of them, and there were actually so many, it is all probably more than I can say without forgetting some.  It encourages me though and I hope you will be encouraged too.  Being kind to each other enriches our world.

Red hot kindness

During the summer months where I live, it can get pretty hot.  We have reached the triple digits every day lately.  Heat can do many things to people, but don't be overcome by it.  Remember the sunscreen and the water.  A kind thing to do would be to have extra to share with someone who might forget.  (Drugstores often have trial size sunscreen and water comes in all sizes these days).  Many cities have cooling centers on those very hot days.  Don't let yourself get overheated, and if you encounter someone who has, seek assistance for them.

Thursday, June 28, 2018

The End

Well today I will end the lists, at least for awhile.  I hope it has been as helpful to you as it has to me.  One thing I always picture on any list of random kindness acts is smiling.  It is such an easy thing to do and it brightens everyone's day.  Oh and a simple greeting.  Trying saying good morning or good afternoon to all the folks you encounter today - yes, even the strangers.  You'll be surprised at how many respond back.

Wednesday, June 27, 2018

Yup, more

Pay for the meal of the person behind you in the drive-through. Bring flowers to work and share them with coworkers. What can YOU add?

Let the person behind you in the grocery store go ahead of you in line. Invite someone new for dinner, either in your home or in a restaurant. More ideas - Donate blood.  Mow a neighbor’s grass or sweep a neighbor’s walk. Offer to return a shopping cart to the store for someone loading a car. Call an estranged family member. Give a bag of groceries to a homeless person. Give coffee to people on their way to work in the morning. Leave a treat or handmade note of thanks for a delivery person or mail carrier. beginning our list

Let's get started with that list of kind things I mentioned.  Buy some bottles of water and randomly hand them out to strangers on the street. Drop off a plant or a plate of cookies to your nearby police or fire station. Clean graffiti from neighborhood walls and buildings. Buy a stranger a free pizza. Oh my!  What kind acts can YOU think of?

Watch for something different in June

Usually I write something here about kindness in general terms, but watch for something different in June.  I've not this before, especially back when we first began, but for a few days I am going to do it again.  Lists.  I'll write here some specific acts that we can easily do to show kindness.  I invite you to join me, not only in doing these things, but in adding to the lists.

friendly skies

I less than 24 hours, I will be in the air, heading away for a few days.  One thing I am always amazed by is the kindness of those who work in air travel.  From the baggage handlers to the gate agents to the flight attendants to all the many folks who deal with the public at airports and in the air, it is amazing to me how they can always be so nice, especially when they encounter cranky passengers.

small, barely detectable generousity

I adore Margaret Cho. Most of us know her as a very funny person, but she also happens to be very wise. I have found encouragement in so many things she has said, like this: "Sometimes when we are generous in small, barely detectable ways it can change someone else's life forever."

Monday, June 18, 2018

Plant a tree

One of the kindest things a person can do, is to plant a tree that will some day give shade to people he has never even known!

Sunday, June 17, 2018

Dad

I was fortunate to have a good dad.  He died way too young though.  On this Fathers Day I think of him as we honor all dads.  Fatherhood is a beautiful thing.

Saturday, June 16, 2018

a good deed in a weary world

In The Merchant of Venice, William Shakespeare wrote “How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world.”  I find that very inspiring.

Friday, June 15, 2018

The kindness of neighbors

Since I was little, I have always been aware of the kindness of neighbors.  There was a lovely lady I can recall who always was bringing over fresh bread, right out of her oven.  Mom was always close to the people she lived around.  Apartment living isn't always like that despite what you see on tv sitcoms.  Where I currently live though there are occasional glimpses of neighborly kindness.  The woman across from me once gave me some delicious banana bread.  Yesterday I ran into my neighbor on the other side, returning home with a brand new crock pot.  He gave me his old one!

Thursday, June 14, 2018

Common courtesy

Sometimes kindness is just common courtesy, like holding a door open for someone approaching right behind you, or avoiding that hydroplane experience as your car approaches a pedestrian, or returning that other customer's shopping cart as you return your own.

Wednesday, June 13, 2018

Better, so much better

The world is so much better when people are kind to each other.  Our day is so much better when we are kind to others and they are kind to us.  Everything is so much better with kindness.

Tuesday, June 12, 2018

There once was a Tuesday in June

There once was a Tuesday in June - um, er  You probably thought this was the beginning of a limerick, huh?  How about instead we just make this the beginning of a very kind day!

Monday blues

It seems every week I am hearing folks complain about Mondays.  It's the back to work or back to school day for so many, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing.  We should cherish every moment of our lives and help make them better, not only for ourselves, but for others.  I'm sure a little kindness can cure those Monday blues.

He takes after his father

When someone says "He takes after his father (or mother)," I always think of that in a kind way, unless of course his father was a multiple ax-murderer.

Saturday, June 9, 2018

the kindest thing that you can do

The kindest thing that you can do for another person is what?  Let's think about this.  I really believe that if we spend more time picturing kindness in our minds, we will each become a bit kinder ourselves.  So, what do you think is the kindest thing you can do for someone?

Friday, June 8, 2018

Besties

Today is National Best Friends Day.  I think that is wonderful.  Whether you have one bestie, or BFF (best friend forever) or numerous such friends, it is definitely something to cherish.  Think of all the kind things you do for each other, and be joyful!

Thursday, June 7, 2018

what did you see?

Yesterday I suggested that in addition to being kind, we also take a moment to observe the kind acts around us.  "Observe the little things.  Watch how folks can bring a smile to others," I said.  Well, what did you see?  Sometimes we take things for granted, but if just concentrate a little on doing and on seeing, I think we will all become kinder.  It will be second nature.

Wednesday, June 6, 2018

Observation

Today as you go about your business, take a moment not only to be kind to other people, but also to witness the kindness of others.  Observe the little things.  Watch how folks can bring a smile to others.  It's truly amazing.  Visibly seeing everyday kindness warms your heart.

Helping me

I began this daily blog to help bring more kindness to the world.  I have absolutely no idea if there has been any success.  I must say though that this is helping me.  I've said it before here, but it can be repeated.  By thinking each morning about kindness in the world, I think I am becoming kinder, and that certainly must be a good thing!

Daily Kindness

No, I am not an expert in kindness.  I keep reminding you of that because folks keep saying that I am.  I'm not perfect by any means and I never will be, but I want to be a kinder person.  Each day I try to do a better job.  By writing here every morning about kindness, I'm hopefully not just encouraging you, but also encouraging me and causing me to be more aware of my own actions.

Ice Cream Sunday

Wouldn't you like and ice cream sundae today?  Would that make this and ice cream Sunday?  Oh my!  What a kind thing to do - sharing the joy of ice cream with others/  What's your favorite flavor?  I'm a huge fan of Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey!

Be Kind In June

Be kind in June, just as all other times.  Be kind to your family and to your friends.  Be kind of course to yourself as well.  Let kindness be your daily way.

it's the day for it!

Smiling is always a good thing, but today there is even more reason.  Today is National Smile Day.  Seriously.  I don't make these things up.  So smile a little more - it's the day for it!

Hate cannot drive out hate

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Most people are familiar with those words from the Rev Martin Luther King, Jr.  With all of the hate in the news yesterday it seemed appropriate to think about Dr King's words.  "Hate cannot drive out hate."  May we learn and never forget.

Kinder still

Each day I attempt to be a better person, especially in the way I act toward others.  Each day I try to show more kindness, and then the next day I try to be kinder still.

Monday, May 28, 2018

holding them in a special place

No school and no work today for many people.  Trips to the beach or sales in favorite stores or maybe a baseball game will occupy a lot of folks, but what is today really about?  Today is Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor the men and women of the US military who lost their lives in the line of duty.  We don't know them all of course, but on this day we are holding them in a special place because they did something special for us all.

She brought doughnuts

Yesterday I was at a training for hospital volunteers.  (I've already been volunteering, but going to an occasional meeting helps me to stay fresh, and also meet any new folks).  The person making the presentation is also a volunteer and she does such an amazing job.  She even brought doughnuts!  The kindness was so visible in every direction.

Paying it forward

Was someone especially kind to you recently?  Well pay it forward.  It's really pretty simple to make the world kinder.  If we all continue to pay it forward, it will be a never-ending stream of kindness and that will certainly make this a better world!

Moral support

No, I didn't remember that great thought I had, but last night I received  a message from a future leader.  He was sad that he couldn't make a monetary donation to a fundraiser I am participating in, and said "At the very least, you know you have my moral support!"  Least?  Oh my!  Moral support is so important!  This is one of the kindest, nicest people I know, and he is always involved in programs that make life better.  Here he was worried he wasn't giving what he wanted, when in reality, he was giving a truly great gift for which I will be forever grateful.

Thursday, May 24, 2018

forgotten thoughts

When I woke up this morning, I had a wonderful idea of what to write here.  I usually have some thoughts, but this was very specific and involved a song.  Unfortunately, that's all I remember!  Did you ever forget something so completely in such a short period of time?  Oh well!  Perhaps I will remember and can write about it another day.  In the meantime we can all certainly remember to be kind!

The Kind Waitress

The story of the kind waitress is making the rounds and it truly warmed my heart.  Working behind the counter at a breakfast place, the waitress overheard an elderly customer dining alone say something about having difficulty cutting his food.  The man, who was also on oxygen, didn't ask for help, but the waitress saw that he clearly could use a hand, so you took his plate for a moment and cut up his food.  This of course is above and beyond what we might expect from our food servers, and it is extremely kind!

helping hand of a neighbor

The late Vice President Hubert Horatio Humphrey once said "The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor."

Onward

It was fun yesterday marking another anniversary of this blog.  600?  Oh my!  I really had no idea I would get up that many mornings and write something about kindness.  Now though I move onward.  I want to become a better, kinder person, and I'd love to see a kinder world.  Join me.  Your comments here are always welcome.

SIX HUNDRED

Wow!  I cannot believe it!  This morning is the 600th morning that I have sat down and written something here about kindness.  Thanks to those of you who read this regularly and those who share it.  I know I have made myself a kinder person.  If any of you have been touched by these messages, let us know in the comments below.  Now, onward to 600 more blog entries and hopefully to a kinder world!

Testify to love

Much of the world was watching early this morning as a member of the British Royal Family wed an American in a traditional ceremony attended by some 600 guests and viewers around the world.  Bishop Michael Curry preached about love.  Well preach isn't a strong enough word.  It was electric!  Love and kindness go hand-in-hand, so you know this was an event that captured me.  How wonderful if this testimony to love encouraged more loving actions by everyone who was watching and all who hear of this!

Friday, May 18, 2018

Do me a favor

I'm sure you have heard people say "Do me a favor."  Another way to say that is "do me an act of kindness" or "do me a solid."  Should someone have to ask though?  Isn't it great when those favors just flow forth from us like the water in a stream?  Do me a favor good readers and lets spread that kindness everywhere!

Thursday, May 17, 2018

Always doing Always kind

I know some people who are always doing things for others.  I know some people who are always kind.  I must say, I am so encouraged by these people!

Overflowing mind

Some days when I wake up my mind takes a little longer than my body.  Perhaps my brain is still processing those overnight dreams.  Most days though I find my mind is overflowing with thoughts and ideas.  What will I write about kindness here in this space?  What will I put in another blog I write?  I'm so grateful for good health and the ability to think.  I'm so grateful for all the kindness in the world that inspires me to want more!

Tuesday, May 15, 2018

chocolate chips

Today is National Chocolate Chip Day!  Seriously.  There really is such a thing.  I was just thinking about how kind it would be to share some chocolate chip cookies.  Agree?  I can spend some time in the kitchen or if time and money are an issue, just pop into the grocery store and pick up some packages of chocolate chip cookies.  Then bring your cookies and some napkins and hand them out on the street, take them to work, share them with a neighbor, or spread the treats any way you dream up.  Yummy and kind!

Another glorious day

The sun is shining and the flowers are in bloom, and even though it's only seven o'clock, I just know this is going to be another glorious day!  Of course how our days go depends a lot on us and our actions.  That's where kindness comes in.  Days are always better when we are kind to each other!

Sunday, May 13, 2018

Going up

While I have no official statistics, it seems kindness goes up every year on Mothers Day.  Everyone wants to be especially kind to their mom.  Cards, breakfast in bed, presents, a fancy brunch - we do so many different thing to show Mom we love her.  I'm always happy to see kindness go up, but how incredible if we showed the same manner of kindness every single day!

The little ones

Yesterday I was at a restaurant and I saw a little boy - he was probably only five or six, run to the door and hold it for an elderly woman.  The woman was very impressed with his kindness and so was I.  When the little ones begin showing courtesy at an early age, you can bet they are going to grow up and be very kind people!

neuroscience

Being kind to other people actually benefits the brain of the giver more than that of the receiver.  Leave it to neuroscience to help make us more kind!

Thursday, May 10, 2018

stay positive

Stay positive.  Love yourself for what you are, instead of hating yourself for what you are not.  Do the same thing with others.  Life is so much better without negativity.

Book of Life

The book of life isn't just a single page, it has many different chapters.  If you don't like a chapter, keep turning the pages.  One bad chapter doesn't mean that you have finished the book.

What say you

Three days of quoting the same person got me thinking.  What do I say that folks might want to repeat?  Better yet, what to YOU say?  Do you ever speak of kindness and good deeds?  Do encouraging things come from your mouth?  Share some of them!

at the store

The other day while I was at the store, the lady in front of me was having trouble paying.  She presented a VISA card, but the store doesn't accept VISA.  She was traveling from Canada and it seems the only cash she had was Canadian.  She kept apologizing but really had done nothing wrong.  I asked how much it all cost and it was only fourteen dollars and some change, so I handed the cashier a twenty dollar bill.  You would think I had just given her a new car!  Both the lady and the cashier kept thanking me.  The lady then offered to give me the equivalent in Canadian currency.  Nope.  That's fine.  Glad I could help.  And that was that.  I just know this lady will be helping someone else one day!

What it takes

I wish I had all the answers.  Just because I write about being kind, doesn't mean I know everything.  It doesn't even mean that I'm actually a kind person myself, although I do try to be.  It would be nice if there was a perfect list of what it takes.  Being kind isn't just one thing though.  I can't simply state what it takes in a simple paragraph, because there are many factors.  Lets begin though with showing love and respect, caring and concern, and some common courtesy.

From Dr Brothers

Remember Dr Joyce Brothers? She was a columnist, a tv personality and perhaps most significantly, a psychologist. She always had wonderful things to say. Once Dr Brothers said "Love comes when manipulation stops; when you think more about the other person than about his or her reactions to you. When you dare to reveal yourself fully. When you dare to be vulnerable."

May the Fourth

I wonder how many people when they hear "May the Fourth be with you," respond "And also with you."  I wonder.

Thursday, May 3, 2018

What's today all about?

What's today all about?  What do we celebrate on May 3rd?  Why kindness of course!  Kindness should be celebrated every day.  Who wouldn't want more kindness in the world?

Wednesday, May 2, 2018

back to you

Sometimes you are kind to me and I am kind back to you, because seeing you happy creates this sense of joy that I really want to see more of.  If we all are kind to each other and it just keeps on going with one person after another and each back to the other, think of how much joy the world will have!

May Day

There was once a big deal made of the first day of May.  In small towns especially, small baskets filled with homemade bread or cookies, cut flowers, or other goodies, would be left at someone's doorstep. You would set down the basket, ring the doorbell, and run away.  Of course there are other May Day traditions in the various places where it is celebrated, but this one seems to be such a lovely act of kindness.  I think it would be a nice random thing to do any day!

That's a wrap

Okay folks, that's a wrap - on April that is.  Of course just because the month ends today, doesn't mean our kindness ends.  We plan to be more kind each day.  I love the feeling when someone smiles and nods at me or when they say thanks.  Being a kind person isn't just for the folks you are kind to - it makes you feel good too!

Sunday, April 29, 2018

those April showers

Has it been raining where you live? Somehow I just thought of Judy Garland singing "it isn't raining rain you know, i t's raining violets."  Anyway, they say that April showers bring May flowers.  Think about all we have to look forward to in the days ahead!

What are you expecting

Have you read this blog before?  Do you read it often?  Just what are you expecting to see me write about?  Kindness of course!  Being kind is enjoying life.  Oh my!  The kinder people are, the better our world is.  Don't you agree?

Springtime ease

The beauty of the spring and even the generally nice weather seem to make everything a little bit easier.  That seems to even include niceness.

The best tonic

I am hoping to be sleeping in my own bed tonight.  Hospital beds are just not that comfortable.  I have never seen so much kindness though.  Yes, some of it is certainly part of the job description, but I have seen a number of nurses, technicians, and others rise above doing just what they have to, to doing what comes from their hearts.  As I said yesterday, that is the best tonic indeed!

Wednesday, April 25, 2018

Tardy

Tardiness can sometimes be excused.  Today I am writing words here a little later than usual because I am once again in hospital.  Please be kind and forgive me for being so late.  Since this isn't a personal blog, I won't go into why I am here, but let me say I have seen many acts of kindness!  Can there be any better medicine?

Tuesday, April 24, 2018

Can you make a list?

Just the other day I listed some things that we might do for each other.  These random acts of kindness are only a starting point.  The list of ideas is endless.  I have found that just by thinking about it, I have a desire to do more and more kind things.  How about you?  Can you make a list?  Think of some kind acts.  Share your ideas with us too!

The beauty of the earth

Each morning I see things I haven't noticed before.  I see trees and plants and flowers I wasn't aware of and I notice the clouds in the sky and the birds that fly past me and even the occasional rabbit that runs away as I approach.  When you live in a big city, as I used to, you might not be as aware, but I have friends who notice and rejoice in the beauty of the earth.  When you see this, you have to think about preserving it.  We need to think about keeping the beauty around for others.  We need to be kind to our planet, just as we are kind to each other.

How would you like to be remembered?

Yesterday I watched the funeral for former First Lady Barbara Bush.  So many kind words were spoken.  It has been that way since she passed last week.  How would you like to be remembered?  Wouldn't it be wonderful if, like Mrs Bush, you were remembered for being nice to others - for being a kind and giving person?  What a marvelous legacy!

Always

If someone asks you when you should be kind to others, there really is only one answer:  always.  Being kind isn't just for special occasions, it is something that should happen every single day of our lives!

Nana

April 20th was my grandmother's birthday.  I'm not good with dates generally, but I could always remember hers.  She was a very kind woman and I miss her.  How wonderful when one of the greatest memories is of a person's kindness!

Thanks Mrs Bush

Thinking this morning of former First Lady Barbara Bush who passed away yesterday.  I kind and caring woman, I will always remember her words:  "Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people - your family, friends, and coworkers, and even strangers you meet along the way."  Thanks Mrs Bush.

I admire kind people

Rabbi and Jewish theologian and philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel once said "When I was young, I used to admire intelligent people as I grow older, I admire kind people." You KNOW I agree with that!

From Tom Giaquinto

In his book Be A Good Human, Tom Giaquinto says this very important thing:  "We change the world a little each day with our kindness."

the joys of kindness

For me there is something especially joyful about not only doing kind thing, but also witnessing them.  I love seeing other people do nice things for each other.  It really makes my day!

The flowers that bloom in the spring

While I know some of our North American friends still have snow and ice, many more are seeing those first signs that the season is changing and the flowers that bloom in the spring are always such a pretty and encouraging symbol.  One of the kindest things a person can do is to give flowers to someone else.  If you have your own garden, that can be a lovely place to find some beautiful stems, and it is usually fairly each to pick up a nice bunch at the supermarket.

Big Word

Want to know a big word?  Friggatriskaidekaphobia.  It means fear of Friday the 13th.  Did you already know that?  You probably do know that triskaidekaphobia means the fear of the number thirteen.  Anyway, have no fear.  Just be kind and caring today like any other day.

In the workplace

Yesterday I was at an anti-harassment training and I was thinking about kindness in the workplace.  The inappropriate behavior we were warned against seems simple enough to avoid and yet so many have to endure this on a daily basis.  Just like at home and with our friends, kindness it seems is the solution.  Be kind always with no bullying or harassment.  That should be so easy.
