The May Pole

I remember back when I was little (perhaps a kinder and gentler time) when we danced around a Maypole on the first day of May. Poet Jonathan Swift describes a Maypole this way:
Deprived of root, and branch, and rind,
Yet flowers I bear of every kind:
And such is my prolific power,
They bloom in less than half an hour;
